Favorite DCA Soloist

Recommended Posts

That is OK because my best year as a soloist may have been 1975 or 1976.

Donny

Both my friend

But you didn't hear it from me.

Frank Ponzo isn't a competing member of DCA...he's in Cabs Alumni.

OUCH...that hurt....but nobody mentioned that I had to be a competing member...if that was the case Chris, why did you not mention that Dave Martin is not a competing member either??? Or many of the other guys mentioned??? WASSSSSSUPWITDAT? What does me not marching anymore have to do with me being someone's favorite DCA Soloist? As well, the Cabs Alumni are STILL part of DCA....they are a DCA Alumni corps!!!

But.....Enough of that......

Thank you to all the people that put me on this list. It truly is an honor to recognized by my peers (yes...many of you ARE my peers even though I don't march anymore as Chris so boldly pointed out..), and I owe you all a huge debt of gratitude.

I hope you all don't mind, but I wanted to give you my list of "BEST DCA SOLOISTS"....current or not.....and not in any particular order...

To Curt Hawkins.....man do I apprecaite your words....they do come from a true FRIEND!!! But you know how I feel about you and your playing.....NOBODY comes close to that sound you put out of that horn...no valves, 1 valve, 2 valves or a trumpet....it doesn't matter....YOU DA MAN!!!! The sweetest tone quality of them all....the only person that ever brought a tear to my eye when I heard them play. (I know... a little sobby, but I really don't care!!!)

Donnie Allan is and always will be one of the best TRUE soloist there is. If you want something improvised, Donnie is the man to do it......different solos, every week in the same song....and never got the credit he deserved for it back in his days with Empire....just simply amazing!!!

Dave Martin.....unbelieveable range, unbelieveable sound

Jeff Gibbons.....not much I can say about him.....there is still so much I can learn from him....and not enough time in my life!

Jermoe Kimbrough.....HOLY CRAP what a sound he puts through that baritone. Sweet, pure tone quality, incredible range, and an all around great guy to go with it.

Genevive Danis.....another amazing baritone player. Never had the oppornity to meet her, but ####...can she play!!! "First Time Ever I saw Your Face" is probably one of the most emotional solos I have EVER heard besides Curt's "The Prayer" in 2003...and I believe they were both the same year.....If Curt didn't win Best Soloist that year, I believe Genevive would have!!!

Joey Pero....ahh...so much talent, so young, and so incredibly funny as well.....wish I lived closer to him too so I could learn more from him as well....

Roger Grupp.....another GREAT soloist with a pure sweet sound, and incredible range.....many times I thought should have been DCA's BEST!!!!!

George Richardson....taken from us WAAAAAAAAY to early. So many more great years to be had with the Skyliner organizations, and one that I will personally miss immensely. The sweetest of them all....range, tone quality, and an all around amazing sound. There will never be anyone like George again."Often replicated, never duplicated"!

Ruben Ariola.......probably the best all around Baritone soloist EVER. Range, technique, tone quality...he has it all.

George DelMonte......George is the reason I am a soloist today. Even as a Sunriser, I used to listen to his recordings of the Caballeros in the 70's, and I wanted to play like this man. Just an amazing player that played with so much emotion. Another person that had range, technique and an incredible sound. I had the honor of finally being introduced to him by Mike Ryan back around the 50th anniversary of the Caballeros, and I call this man my friend now. What an honor!!!!!

And last but not least.....

Tommy Martin......this man was a player way before his time. Had (and still has) all of the same qualities that Ruben does, but Tommy can play louder than anyone I have ever heard. You can put Tommy behind a 60 man hornline playing at double forte, and he would project over them like they were playing at a pianissimo. Not only that, but he is the nicest guy in the world, and the person I call my mentor. I am very fortunate to live right around the block from him, and I get to pick his brains about anything I want. Great instructor to me, and a great personal friend as well.

That's all I can think of right now.....it's late for me, and way past my bedtime.

See you all soon.....

Joey Pero is active in DCA and he doesn't march. (lol) He's somebody's favorite soloist. My favorite is Frank. Dave "Boots" Martin is up there as well. "Rolan" (sp) really impresses me. There was a guy with jet-black hair who used to march in the Matadors in the early 80's. I can not remember his name. I saw him at my very first Drumcorps show in 1982. (Rome, NY) "Screech" from the Sunrisers was there. "Sun" stood next to us during retreat. I never heard so many high notes in such a short period of time. This was the same show where I witnessed George Parks, from Reading, throw his Mace in the air, catch it, he then ran into the stands, grabbed some little kids hotdog, took a bite from it, gave it back to the kid, and ran back on to the field. He then threw his Mace back into the air, caught it, and the crowd went nuts!!! This is a true story. This was my introduction to DCA. I remember thinking to myself after the show was over: "I can't wait until next weekend." That's all.............for now.

My vote for contra soloist is Howard Godfrey of the Erie Thunderbirds, not because he is the love of my life, but, when he opened up our Mini Corps Show in 2004 with Come follow the Corps...he Rocked! :worthy:
