Last weekend I drove by my old Bingo Hall

Recommended Posts

It's been a couple years, and I don't recall the business that occupies the building....BUT...the building that housed the Am. Leg. Post 229 in Utica, NY...is still there. Wish the Magnificent Yankees still were there, too. :(

VK's last corps hall, and the school next to it, are a subdivision now. An old store-front that the corps used as a hall/thrift store may still exist in Central Anaheim.

The first hall I practiced at, in downtown Santa Ana, was home to the Pacific Symphony for several years. And our practice field at the LA Times plant in Costa Mesa was paved over for more truck parking years ago.

Charity Casino would be a good way to finance a drum corps....*tapping finger on tooth*

Charity Casino, my butt, they're run by the provincial government.

The governement takes what they want and then what's left is given out to over three hundred charities. :(

Not much left after every one takes their cut !! <**>

Saw Westshoremens 1980s equipment truck being used by a local recycling company about ten years ago. When I said something, the owner responded with a five minute string of profanity about how the truck was a piece of crap.... never should have bought it.... etc... etc...

Know it was the corps old truck because "Westshoremen Drum & Bugle Corps" was still painted still on the side.

Must not have been in that bad of shape as the recycling place used it for years. About once a year someone would ask me if the corps was still around as they "just saw the truck going down the road". :tic:

Back in 76, we had to walk past a drive in movie lot to catch the bus after practice at the GE parking lot just down the street from it... we use to stop and sit on the bridge by the drive in and watch the movies without the sound ( this was back in the days when those speakers that went into the windows were used) and make our own diologe to the movie playing. It is now a ToysRUs.

In my GSC days (68/69) we rehearsed at a Grange Hall that had a drive-in next door.

One evening rehearsal the drumline was sent outside to rehearse as the theater was showing a movie with lots of nudity (for the day...mostly b**bs ).

Well...us kids in the line saw this, but our instructor did not...so as we marked time we did a slow 90 degree wheel so that we were facing the screen while his back was to it. He was wondering WHY we were turning and looked at us rather oddly. As our performance level declined (in direct proportion to the number of b**bs on the screen, he eventually turned around. Needless to say...he ran us back inside. :P

Both are long gone...a hotel is there now.

Yep. The major charity is the government. That's why I said a charity casino is an oxymoron.

Me and the boyfriend decided it'd be nice to show him around my hometown and relive a few memories. He thought the idea was neat, so off to Salem we went!

First, we went to Bush Park, and specifically McCulluch Stadium, where my corps played its home shows.

The good news, the stadium is still there.

The bad news, someone replaced the grass on the field with astroturf.

Other than that, those old wooden stadium benches were still there and could still give a good splinter! :)

Next, we went to my old beloved Argonauts Bingo Hall. It was next door to a Goodwill store off a North Salem thoroughfare.

The Goodwill store was gone.

The Bingo Hall was gone.

it was now a GRASS FIELD with a few places of concrete where the car park USED to be!

OUCH!!!! THAT REALLY HURTS!!!!

:(

Anyone else get a shock like this? All that is left is memories, and I didn't even get to protest its demolition!

Too many to think about..

First.. Drum corps is no more at Holman Stadium in Nashua, NH. Where I started over 30 years ago. The competition is still!!! (Yeah Spartans!! :) But the competition is now held at Stelious Field. Much better - logistically. It's actually a football field! But the memories for me are at Holman Stadium. Forth of July specifically.

Second.. Lowell, MA. I heard that THAT stadium is no more. I think I marched there in my hometown corps more than anywhere else.

Third.. Manning Bowl. Lynn, MA. I marched more THERE with North Star than probably any other stadium ever! Also got to march there with my Senior corps. ALOT! Many great memories there!

Forth.. Mile High Stadium. Denver, Co. My first DCI finals. No more.

Oh well.. Life goes on.

Sharon
