Cavaliers are very much still in the game whether anyone likes it or not. Be careful, they have a tendency to pop one out and suprise everyone during finals week (i.e. 2000, 2001 and 2004) I called it in early June and still feel the same. They will suprise a lot of people. I see Cavaliers, Bluecoats, Blue Devils, Cadets , Crown and the Phantom, with maybe a change in 2/3 and 3/4.

Anyone got a review? That sounds like an ugly night for Regiment.

Hunting season on migratory fowl??

Surface to air missiles?

Issues due to rain?

well, I'm a lousy reviewer, but I'll give it a shot.

I thought Phantom sounded beautiful tonight. Their "Lakme" piece tonight was just gorgeous sounding, and I heard without looking at him a fellow say quietly to his wife (? ... I assume?) "that is just beautiful" and I had to agree. You could hear a pin drop as the soloists played. It is just my opinion that it was a relaxed and smooth Phantom Regiment from where I was, and they flowed through their show with grace. The hornline was lush and full, and the drums were so ON, I was blown away. Watched their drumline out "in the lot" as well and they were just flowing through their excercises and show... They are on cruise control! I heard another gentleman say to another as the corps walked off the field: "Yes! It was good! We just added that today!" ... so whatever "that" was, was just put in today... I guess. :grouphug: Their marching and all movement was absolutely on tonight... and they are such a beautiful corps to look at out there, which doesn't count for much, but it's darned impressive. The horns are gorgeous and look absolutely new out of the box never had a human hand touch them before...especially those contras... and the uniform this year with that teal color is just so... I dunno... "Clean" looking. I thought they would be closer to Cavaliers than two points off, but I didn't think they had won the show, because...

Cavaliers? I just really wasn't sure Billy Joel would do it for me after the innovative show last year, which I personally liked a lot. Again this year they seem in constant motion, but play their show... especially from a percussion standpoint... just in your face. And a few spots when they end a piece they are all just doing their own thing and pointing at the audience or giving knuckles to each other and basically just saying to the crowd: "How'd ya like THAT?" (literally) ... And they can pull it off, because they are really just that good. The hornbook to me sounds tremendously difficult, with very stacatto sounding triple tongues and rippling runs of notes as they move at frenetic paces around the field. The drumline (as I said before) just plays everything right out there... and very cleanly... like diddle passages and flam drag action as they crab it and run backwards and come to breakneck stops all over the place. I was chilled up several times. My only teensy little critiscism (if I had to find one) was a small section near the end that seemed to lose me when I was kind of saying "OK OK... this is a little long in here... do something" and just then the guard all falls away and stuff goes flying everywhere in what looks like uncatchable tosses of equipment all over and across the set... and they of course catch it all... and you hear the crowd just all cumulatively gasp and ooo and ahhh! It was quite awesome.

Boston Crusaders were the ones to me who sounded a little rough tonight. Many drum "blops" and accents that should have sounded like one "gock" sounded like several snare drummers "gocking." I though BAC's guard was cool, they had some big colorful stuff going out there that was nice to look at, and they were effective in the "pictures." ("sets")

But even though drill-wise I thought they looked pretty solid, they sounded just a little rough to me. But in fairness to them, we did watch them from way over to the side. Good volume coming out of them tonight, that's for sure, and a busy drill with some good front of the field hornline and guard visual stuff with "window pane" things and ... nice action in there and great coverage right up in front of the field.

Apologies to Colts (who I DID want to see but missed), Southwind and Pioneer, as we missed them tonight due to our overstaying out in the lots. But a "hats off" to Southwind who were doing blocks and practicing stops and turns right out in the street of the neighborhood there... and they looked good! Their drumline was hot sounding AGAIN (if you remember my Lisle, IL review) and I gotta tell ya, that tenor line is REALLY good.

Colt's drumline sounded great in the lot, and their instructor was not letting anything slip by. He stopped it every time he heard a slight fuzzout, so obviously he has them cranking it up as they move across the country to Pasadena.

I hope that was worth the read... I suck at critical reviews, because I like everyone!
