Eleran
Ultimately, I doubt any of the 501©(3)s involved, DCI or its member organizations, include in their certificate of organization the stated purpose of providing fair and unbiased judged competitions. I'm pretty sure that as long as the corps continue to provide musical education, and as long as DCI supports those corps, the competitive aspect is meaningless (in the eyes of the law).
Popular Post hostrauser
Gah. Why are old people always so cranky about absurd nonsense like this? Doesn't John Blair have something better to do with his time, like complain to his city council about the types of trees they used in the newest park? Write angry op-ed columns to the local paper about potholes?
Slingerland
He's lost the moment he opens the second paragraph with "DCI purports to be a 501©(3) organization..."No. They ARE a 501©(3) organization. It's pretty cut and dried. The tax status of a business isn't a matter of opinion.
Lincoln
So...will the IRS investigate this?...and will DCI need to be assigning some resources ($) to deal with it?
2muchcoffeeman
So...will the IRS investigate this?...and will DCI need to be assigning some resources ($) to deal with it? Only the IRS, and DCI, can say. My guess: No, and no.
Jeff Ream
Michael Cesario plays a large role in setting trends in drum corps. And he plays a large role in how trends are judged in drum corps. The questions raised are completely valid. Are they well articulated, or should they in any way involve the IRS? Not sure. Should the email exchange with Dan Acheson be posted on facebook? Doubtful. But the questions being raised are not "stupid as all hell." Also, the Michael Jordan analogy is not accurate in this case, as Michael Jordan is not profiting from the competitive results of other teams that use his product relative to teams that don't use his product. A better analogy would be Michael Jordan enacting a rule in the NBA saying that teams with green in their jerseys automatically get 5 points added to their score when Michael Jordan has a monopoly on green thread. well in doing some research, it seems Mr. Blair has some long standing grudges with Cesario.
