Averaging scores

Look at CC's GE score from last night.  microphone failing put them way down in the score which is how it should be.  If you are going to rely on electronics then you have to be held accountable.  I thought it was reflective in the M/A score but someone corrected me and said it was in GE (is #1 for music)?

IF YOU CHOKE ON FINALS it should affect your overall score more should it not?  Look what happened in 89.

I look at averaging as a way to excuse a sloppy finals performance.

reminds of an old adage from bitd of "you live by the solo, you die by the solo."

I absolutely hate how much GE controls the sheets. It's more about staff then member performance.

Let's take it one step further:  No Prelims and no Semis.  Everyone shows up on Saturday and gives it their best shot.  Highest score wins.  Saves a lot of money though Indy might not like it. Top 12 appear at Retreat or even just the DMs of the competing Corps.

But how do I watch lots and watch inside?

Finals night should be 50% of the score and the other two nights 25 each.  Averaging 3 nights is like giving participation medals...Oh wait they do.

This is an interesting view coming from a poster who has, more than once, suggested the opinions of fans of other corps are less worthy because BD has won many more titles over the past 40 YEARS.

You may have to pick and choose.  Sorry!

I would like to know how to score a top corps after a judge trips over a marching member and the next 6 people trip over him, rendering him injured and needing medical attention on the field while destroying the instruments of the other 6 people who went down?

This is not possible scenario, it is a probable scenario.  It's not a matter of "if" it's simply a matter of "when."

While I am not going to do this, I guarantee I could put together different judging panels that would yield different results Finals night. The difference in placements and scores would not be drastic, SCV would not fall to 7th and Cadets would not jump to 2nd. But scores and placements would shift throughout the 12 positions depending on the panel chosen. This is because judging is 100% subjective opinion based on sheet interpretation combined with what is observed. And since it is 100% subjective, I personally do not mind some sort of combined weighting system from Thur, Fri, and Sat not only for Caption Awards but for overall Final Placement.

There's good and bad things with the crowd who says "only finals night" or "average of the three nights."

In the former, one rogue judge can basically decide the award

In the latter, one bad performance can discredit the consistent excellence over the course of a season.

I like Flammaster's suggestion because it still takes into account the need for consistency while still emphasizing that bringing it on finals night is important.

It seems that both the Caption Awards and final scoring should be on the same basis (i.e. Saturday only -OR- average/weighted average).  I wonder why there is inconsistency among these.

i prefer an average/weighted average scenario, as it rewards consistency.  Let's assume both BD and SCV had off nights on Saturday, while CC killed it.  CC could have won due simply to uncharacteristic off nights of the 2 top contenders.  By averaging scores of all 3 nights, corps with greatest consistency are rewarded (nothing intended as a criticism of CC, as I would not have bee disappointed if they had won; this is merely an example).

Championship golf events use sum of all days' scores, so this would not be much different).
