Just found that interesting.

*********************

On June 20th in Clovis, CA, the Blue Devils C scored 33.5. It is the lowest score of the DCI season.

Youngsters might not realize that back in the 1980s and early 1990s, not only were all corps judged on the same sheet, but there were hundreds more tiny, local corps with only two or three dozen kids who went out and competed against the likes of The Cadets and Phantom Regiment. As a result, scores could get... low. Very low. 20s were super common, and scores in the teens were not unheard of. But, in 1992, a record was set. At a show in Randolph, Massachusetts, the Braintree Braves from Braintree, MA scored...

6/27/92 Randolph, MA - Division III
53.1 Citations
45.0 East Coast Cadets
3.6 Braintree Braves

Three point six. It is (as far as I know) the lowest score ever given to a corps in DCI history. The Braves would go on to post scores of 8.2 and 8.8 at other shows that season before ending at a comparatively respectable 33.3 in their final show.

*********************

The Cardinals of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada may have pulled off an even more impressive feat. On June 30th, 1988 in Windsor, Ontario, at a show with five corps, the Cardinals posted a score of 26.5.

And won.

6/30/88 Windsor, ON

26.5 Cardinals

23.6 Oakland Crusaders

23.2 Joliet Kingsmen

21.8 Cadets of Dutch Boy

6.6 Cavalcade

It is (as far as I know) the lowest top score at a show in DCI history.

But, Jim Buglio who I believe still ran and kept the Braves afloat back then, and I marched with the Braves in the late 50's and under the tutelage of Ed Denon (LT.Norman Princemen mm and HPC/BAC horn instructor) and Paul Palange (LT. NP mm) beat the St. Kevin's Emerald Gems in 59 to win the Eastern Mass Class C Championships.

as far as national shows one of the lower scores ever achieved was Silver Spectrum in the 1979 DCI Prelims they also hold the distinction of being the only corps to compete twice in the same years' prelims, so they ended up performing for the crowd more than the 18-25 place corps that year, yet placed last at prelims (both times they performed) (They were also known as the "Eye Openers")

Also interesting is that from the 71 World Open, 7 of 12 finalists are still competing, the 2nd place corps and the corps from 5th-10th.

4 of 10 1964 finalists are still competing (Kilties in DCA, though).

5 of 12 64 VFW Nats finalists still compete (see Kilts above).

careful Mike some may put that conspiracy stuff back up again or was it the percentages of only certain corps making it to the top. Of course it has nothing to do with being good or in this case longevity and maybe better management. :sarcasm:

And to compare things to the "other side"

Great timing as yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the first DCA show:

Saturday July 11, 1964

Baltimore MD 11th Annual March of Champions

1 New York Skyliners 85.530

2 Connecticut Hurricanes 84.580

3 Reading Buccaneers 83.150

4 Syracuse Brigadiers 82.050

5 Interstatesmen 80.530

6 Archer-Epler Musketeers 80.050

Of those 6 corps:

2 have been competing the entire 50 years (Hurrcs, Buccs)

One just returned this year (Sky)

3 went defunct and came back to compete but went defunct again (Archie, Brigs, I-men)

At least 3 corps currently have Alumni corps (Archie, Buccs, Sky)
