  1. Yogi- I will let others that have spent time with me assess my qualifications as a brass player and/or abililties to assess whether a hornline is using great technique and producing great sound as well. I have no bias to Crown because they have been labeled the new Star of Indiana. I think that is an insult to what Crown has accomplished as they are their own entity and other than having a staff that grew up in the Star ranks there are no correlations between the two. My observations of Crown's hornline are very unbiased other than I love the way they approach ensemble brass playing and the sound and clarity which they achieved this year. To me great hornlines produce balanced sound with great attention to detail not only from a balance and blend but also from a clarity of the sound and silence that makes up music. Let me hear a solid attack and release with full balanced sound in between and that makes my day. And one last thing that those that I have marched with and spent time with can tell you..... If a corps is using what we called the "program" I will listen to it with even more critical ears than corps that approach brass playing differently. I cannot stand when a hornline gives up the little #### and doesn't address every detail. As I have said a few times since August..... I feel the Crown hornline from this year has raised the bar as the most complete hornline in DCI history. Yes we all have our opinion but prior to this year when I would listen to lines for balance, blend, pure sound and clarity I always did compare them to our line of 1992. There is now a new sheriff in town from my perspective.

  3. Cavaliers might take gold. It's been six years, and I bet they are hungry for it. (Just look how hungry the Cadets were after six years.) Cavies are gonna come out swinging this year.

  4. Great show! I'm not a fan of sampling in shows, but My Bonny Boy by Visnja just sets the tone for this production. Everything just clicks about this program.

  5. Never say "never", but I doubt anyone will ever again win I&E on both soprano and snare. A few years ago, I was looking for a piece to play at DCA I&E on my old-school slip-slide horn. "Stardust" seemed ideal, but Bobby Adair virtually owned that solo, so I called him to get his blessing. After introducing myself, I asked if I could play it for him on speaker phone to get his input. He laughed. "Hey, man. Play it just like that", he said. "You'll do fine." I did, and I won. The way I figure it, that medal belongs to him. I was just passing along his mojo. God bless Bobby Adair. We won't see the likes of him again.

  11. What can I add? It took me quite a few viewings to "get" BK's show this past summer. However, after watching the show for the 27th time, I had an AHA! moment. I turned to my seat mate and said, "Danny, boy, that was a great show!" Only kidding, I loved the show.

  12. I hold pioneer very close to my heart....some of the best years of my life. That being said, it was a stepping stone in my personal development, which was the purpose of a Div. II or III corps (Now Open Class). I have ZERO problems with a corps wanting to break free of the "We're here to get you to the next level" mentality....BUT...there has to be some level of self awareness. Pioneer sits within a 5 to 6 hour Drive away from four or five other World Class corps currently in the top 12, with even more just a bit further. Making recuritement TOUGH....not impossible, but tough. This ONE reason alone, is why I feel like Pioneer should be back in Open Class. While many don't like to look at it this way.....drum corps, (World class especially) is a business! Would a business man knowingly open up a small mom and pop shop just trying to get their start, right next door to a nation wide chain....I don't think so. You move across town, build your business.....While I'm not implying Pioneer should up and move (Maybe not the WORST idea either)...I'm simply pointing out that maybe it would be best to except their "place" in the grand scheme of things. As a side note.....I can honestly say I don't know what Pioneer's Foucs is.....are we JUST here to Entertain and have NO care of placement? If that is the case....then who cares what anyone else thinks, and I applaude you! Skip the judges tapes and comments and just perform! But is that real? It seems to me, that it's always easy to claim...."We don't care about winning or losing" when you have ZERO chance of winning. I was a member of that corps when they were winning division II and III....and from what I can tell....the corps "Motto" and mentality hasn't changed.

  13. This is just ridiculous.. Everyone knows that Bears come from Chicago and last time I checked they would have to pass through Rosemont before they got to Rockford... So if anything The Cavaliers should be worried because they dont have Gaines to protect them anymore

  14. I haven't had a chance to try them myself yet, but the Pearl carbon ply drums have gotten good reviews so far. One of the groups I teach is about due for some new drums, so I may see if we can try some out. As for stands, I don't mind letting my students use them if we're going to be stationary for a long time. The catch is, they can't start to develop bad habits (tenors leaning out over the drums, snares slouching, basses getting lazy with technique). The second that happens, the stands go away.

  15. If anyone is coming in for Marty's service on the 4th and is planning on playing with the 200 + drumline and need equipment, let me know. I grew up in New Orleans corps and have known Marty both corps wise and as a fellow band director for over 30 years. I can loan out a few snares and a bass line of 18/20/22/24/26/28 for the service ( and some decent cymbals. ) ( my toms are taken apart and refigured so they would not be suitable.) Let me know if you need something and we can make arrangements

  16. I know you're referring to 2009 here but being part of the 1976 fiasco I'd say that 1976 "show #1" was by far the worst idea a Madison design staff ever regurgitated. After 1975 (for some reason that I still am not clear on) we had a whole new staff and design team that decided a disco show would be a great follow up to the 1975 blow the stands back show. The fist few shows there was a mixture of golf clapping, silence and cat calls from the audience. Shortly there after we had the old staff back handing out new music to learn while we went on our western tour.

  18. Putting aside potential issues with health and other regulations, the logistics don't favor any such opportunity. Mike is right about over-taxing food crews who often struggle just to meet the corps' needs. That includes very tight schedules for moving from housing to show sites (where typically there are no water hook-ups and thus no way to clean properly). At most sites there is hardly enough.room for souvies much less a big semi. And then the truck would be far from the corps when it's time for snack. Can't see this happening. HH

  19. Heh, if that's god-awful, I would hate to know what you think of some other lines... Seriously, I can't find a "god-awful" hornline anywhere in WC, from 23 to 1.

  21. I'm not sure I would buy that statement. Cavies and Cadets drill is pretty difficult. If they can apparently march those shows, then why don't they or something of the same difficulty? Maybe because they can't actually march like the Cavies and Cadets, therefore they wouldn't be able to play those shows. In order for me to believe that statement, I would need to see it and hear it.

  22. I completely agree with your opinion. Dancing and choreography while playing is much easier than marching fast and playing.

  23. General predictions that very well may change in a few months: -SCV passing Phantom -The Cavaliers not medaling (as much as it hurts to say! :( ) -SCV medaling -SCV taking percussion -The Academy in Finals -Madison higher than 10th

  26. This year? Cadets without doubt. In a show that was a masterpiece of design, that pit was programmed perfectly, and they carried it off beautifully. There were times when that pit almost felt like the battery driving the melody and the corps. The pit features were integrated seamlessly into the show, showing off their talents while keeping in program character. Kudos to the writers, the staff and the performers. I've never gushed about a pit before. This is the one. HH

  28. 1. but to say Madison has a rich history means very little considering they have all new teaching personnel. WRONG 2. The Board threw-out most of the people like Scott Stewart who knew anything about their 'rich history' and the core of The Corps. WRONG 3, , People age-out, instruction staff changes and no one may be around who really understands what Madison WAS.... WRONG 4.Steve Vickers, publisher of DCW might be one person who can quote chapter and verse about Madison Scouts, he has been involved in some way with the Corps, forever.. and he doesn't march and probably has very little to say about what goes on there. WRONG (only Steve? Really?) 5. When Drum Corps were more neighborhood oriented, and members were local kids, you could keep the nucleus in place for more years, now members might belong for 2 or 3 years max. So, it is more accurate to say Madison Scouts will establish themselves.............again, ..(hopefully) yes hopefully people may know who the Scouts are again

  29. It's all about the show design. They have a very talented percussion arranger and many other staff that remain, but it still is about having time to work together and it just seems that PR has been frantically trying to find that winning 08 formula. I personally loved their show this year, one of the most beautiful productions on the field, but that will not be championship caliber again until they find the design staff that will stick it out and stay loyal to the corps. At the risk of sounding personally critical (which I try to fight against), I think they have worn out the "death and dying" human drama themes, it worked, but they need to move on.

  32. Actually, the first week of the season in June, a few predicted they'd fall out of the Top 12 come Finals Week, so " 11th " would be a step up for such posters in their predictions. That said, I predicted in July, they'd finish 6th or 7th. They were 1.55 pts away from that in the end, but all in all the staff there must have done an amazing job in teaching the Corps throughout the touring season. Boston started the competitive season later than some Corps did, but they finished up the season very, very strong. I'd view this as a testimony to both the staff's ability to teach there as well as the marchers ability to learn and progress.
