  1. As the cone of silence slowly descends, Maxwell Smart says to his boss..."Hey Chief, would you believe Crown is play........" Chief...."What?"

  2. I'm not offended by any of that stuff. I'm bored that they seem to be recycling that thematic idea annually (and even in 2008 when their answer to "gotta have more GE" was seemingly "lets kill more people!"). People can sling that same complaint against other corps in vague/broad terms ('using props every year,' for example) but for me personally I've grown tired of Phantom continually going back to that well.

  3. Add to that all the friends I've made over the years and being taught by some of the greats.

  4. Ok now that the word is out, I was a soprano player who switched to bari when a little bird (Frank Kubinak) told me BS would need baritones. I played that (Lead Bari) until 1966 when I got drafted. When I got out of the service I didn't touch a horn till 1978 when I picked up a soprano again and went to the Sunrisers. Eventurally wound up in Cabs ( lead sop) starting in 1990 till 98 and my Swan song was Sky Alumni 99. Now I dust my horns........ On a side note.....I was a pretty adequate player until I was in Cabs alumni in 94-5 winter and played the scores from the 60's where the leads played ALL the time. When I went back to the competing corps I had incredible chops. Back me up here Frank Ponzo........so I recommend alumni corps to my fellow fossils!.. Sky Alumni was just as good.

  6. There's no need to restrict this sentiment to just off-season sniping; the "my-corps-is-better-than-your-corps" sniping is a full-time/24/7/year-long phenomena

  7. I didn't know that either (but then again I wasn't around when members had to dodge dinosaurs on the field like MikeD did ) I don't know how much it would add though; with tech. now-a-days you could literally compose new music to fit exactly what you want visually, use pretty good synths to get the right patches you want sound-wise, and edit it to fit your show. Adding live musicians would limit your "palette" musically AND potentially take away instruction/cleaning time from the guard: and all for a judging panel where most wouldn't care about live music (due to the rubric on the WGI guard sheets)

  9. Well, this thread has gone about the way I thought it would. Bring out your old grudges and trash other corps.

  10. Some of Tim's Double "A"'s could have put the Blue Devils lead line to shame!

  11. Tim, that's one of the most impressive resumes I've encountered. I was only 16 or 17 when I competed against SAC and always wondered when I saw them, what it must have been like to enter every contest and know you had the ability to win. Those were the golden days for the Golden Knights.

  12. "Michael Boo" .... closest thing to DCP royalty as you're gonna' get. "alumniof" .... just to confirm he/she is that jaded in person. "Jeff Ream" .... in case things got nasty with "alumniof".

  13. This just posted: "In addition to Vienna Teng's "The Hymn of Acxiom" and Tyondai Braxton's "Uffe's Woodshop," the Bluecoats' 2014 program will include Braxton's "Platinum Rows." 15. it's not like DCI set it up this way...well, ok let me rephrase it...it's not like DCI wouldn't welcome them. There's just none wanting to jump into the pool. But...one of the DCI office folks, Sue Keinhold, is probably the most dependable person in the entire organization, wearing a zillion hats and doing every one of them perfectly. In fact, I daresay without, DCI would be a bigger mess.

  16. I agree. If Crown announced too early then BD will be able to up with the perfect defense to stop them from winning. It's exactly like football. I think you may want to re-write this. And this is the attitude that will doom drum corps to oblivion. Crown and others can play Secret Squirrel if they feel it's in their best interests. But the long, off-season hibernation is very, very bad for the growth of the activity as a whole.

  17. I'm back in MA until Monday AM and my wife and daughters family left today for SIL's brothers wedding in MD and return Sunday evening. I'm baby sitting our two schnoodles. Big Bird is back in UT, but I'd be glad to break bread with you this weekend. Are you still in Brockton? As for the topic at hand and in no particular order; Mike Boo for his knowledge of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Drum Corps; how drills are designed/taught has intrigued me for decades so Mike Gaines would fill that interest; and Mr. Brasso so I can learn how he researches all his responses, whether DC related or not, so quickly (do you really think he knows all about what he types? He hasn't been on Jepoardy I believe), and pick up some tips how he tactfully (usually) puts fellow DCP posters in their place.

  20. BD announced their show last year on the day of Spring. And I think crown announced theirs either late April or early May. And BD always gets some sort of new addition to their unis. I just wish DCI had a mandatory date when corps were to announce their shows. Keeping everything a secret has gotten old now. Give the fans what they want and stop horsing around.

  21. Maybe, maybe not. From a pure numbers standpoint brass does not have a huge factor into their score (just as 6th place percussion didn't kill their placement). However, one could argue that their stellar brass: * pushed them to a win in Music Ensemble (a narrow one: they tied Cadets w/99 in content but won Achievement sub) * pushed them to a win on both Music Effect sheets (and a perfect 100 on one judge's sheet) * pushed them to an overall GE win: winning Music Effect by such a large margin helped make up for their 2nd place GE Vis deficit of only .15 So I would say that 2013 Crown's stellar brass contributed to their incredible ensemble sound, which helped them win most music captions which made up for slight deficiencies in Vis captions (note - guard helped them in Vis as well) and large deficiency in percussion.
