  1. Maybe it's "Summer of Climbing Back into the Top 12"? /runs

  2. I'm certain we've all gone WAY off topic from this person's original questions of how hard do we think it is to make BD... But ... I've have had many a conversation with guys who write and arrange, and all of those conversations came back to "playing the game". so to speak. And they're all trying to do that. right now, there's only ONE group consistently playing the game. (design + execution + marketability) The answer is BD. They are setting the standard and the evolution of this activity. If you want to be in that tier, you have to figure out how to bring your group's personality (sound, movement style...etc) to the game that they've established. Crown did that, 'Coats did it sort of, Cadets sort of... but to finish on top, it goes back to hitting all three of those items on the head. Now many corps members in the top 12 can perform to extremely high levels, but not all the corps' shows can provide something that satisfies the game's equation. I would say your finals corps members have the potential to pop the near perfectly executed show on finals night. But it's not necessarily all about that. Its not just a performance based score, and in many cases, it feels like one set of scores, follows the other boxes whether it deserves to or not. The idea that one score can't go up or down until the others do. Gone are the days when ticks count against, and in some cases, what execution is and isn't is now grey area. Heck, we can't even count a corps provided acoustic enhancement system's failure against a performance now. And that itself can remove an entire section of the show, or pivotal moment in the performance but yet still not decide one group's placement over another. This activity, in some cases, doesn't compare apples and oranges against each other, but more often apples and forks. Ok, can we go back to giving this person advice on how not to fall on their face during fundamentals auditions? don't fall on your face kid.

  3. Yes that was an exception, which is Cappybara's point - it is an exception that proves the rule that while it's not impossible to dwell in a mood (you are correct), it is however less common. Moods-per-minute is higher now than it was in the early 80s, say. When 40% of the score is about expression of moods, they do more of them. I'm not complaining about it, although I suspect the new BD International Corps will be able to focus more on entertainment/art than on impressing judges. They might do the most eye-popping things yet in drum corps. Which still could include clips that can't be put on media due to synch rights issues. (Had to bring it back on track for Cowtown...) Actually, I bet they will be careful, because they will get 100% of any sales of BDIC media...

  5. Or perhaps "Summer of Paris Hilton". She is Paris, has probably been there and even has a 2006 album from which music could be extracted and executed.

  8. Well it's been nearly a year since a small group of us got together at Jim and Linda O'briens home to explore the possibility of bringing yet a 3rd alumni/all age corps back to life in Massachusetts. We began practicing once a month starting this past May, and it's been going very well. Let’s just say, we are quite enthused about the level of commitment! While I am not here to make any announcements or predictions, I would like you all to know that we are here, and we intend to be out this June with a full corps production. I promise, we WILL be a complete package. And probably the number one question I hear is, how about the Chrome Wall… Well yeah, it’s very much intact, and smokin’ hot! ! Of course there is ALWAYS room for more, and that goes for every section, so if you’re interested in some great 70’s/80’s drum corps, why not check us out! You can visit us at www.northstarcorps.org and come down for a visit. None of us own a hammer (well some do, but we don't bring them to rehearsal), so we won’t beat on you to join us. You are more than welcome to come, watch, sit in, and of course join. One constant rumor I hear is that “The North Star will be a competing corps”.. There are NO plans at all to do that at this time. We truly want to get together play some of our biggest hits and see where that goes. I guess because we chose to identify ourselves as an "ALL AGE" corps, that sent some sort of thought that we were looking to compete. One thing we (or at least I) would like to do is present a competing minicorps for DCA next summer, but that is still in the planning stages as our primary purpose is to put a rocking corps on the field for your enjoyment. I thougth I would share this photo from one of our summer practices.... yeah yeah, the drums aren't chrome yet... :)

  10. Ha! Says you.... Normally the goal of predictions on DCP is to be snarky, cleaver, or to root for your favorite corps.

  15. 1) BD brass is always aging out but then they get new vets from other corps making them just as good as the year before. 2) Cavies have only improved 1 spot each year from 12-14 where others have gained more each year. 3)Phantom is on a decline with vets and staff changes and putting them ahead of cadets is just not right. Cadets have consistency in staff and havent been out of the top 5 since 1991. 4) typical Boston prediction. Every year they are put 8th and say they will have a great year with no reasoning. 5) Madison is all up in the air. New staff can sink or swim. Just because you have names doesnt mean it will be success the first year. 6) I am in no way a BK fan/homer but i cannot deny that they have been getting better especially with beating Phantom several times last year (which is where PHantom is in the decline losing to groups they normally beat) 7) You have a group that almost broke 90 completely dropping out of finals. Stars got 9th beating groups you expect to be 8th-9th. If they drop they will not drop out of finals and the only staff change was brass caption head keeping rest of brass staff, vis staff, and guard staff(4th best guard in DCI) 8) Troopers in finals is always just a fan throw in. they just want them to get 12th. (Look at previous 3 years of predictions) The best chance to sneak into top 12 my bet is Colts. And Spirit is up in the air of will they return or fall behind.

  16. A lot of keystrokes and thoughts have taken place since Boston announced their theme this year. Some have felt the recent video's from two design staff members was a way of explaining this show to everyone. After a few days of waiting, permission was granted to post this author's reading of how they see Animal Farm. A person by the way who never marched in any musical unit. Enjoy. "******* , the following is how I would describe what BAC is all about this year in response to your question regarding what does animal farm/bac have to do with their display of G7. Ive taken a plot summary of the book and inserted in bold type how I see what the designers were establishing. You can look at it two ways , that its chaotic and hard to understand or that it is pure genius..I believe as time goes by it will be recognized as pure genius. An example of the subtlety of it is really highlighted in your other question why cant BAC form there letters at the end like Carolina forms their crown !!!!! That is precisely how the irony of their show done as a parody of the growth of drum corps as juxtaposed with the Russian revolution. You cannot narrate that during a show . Its all really meant to think of drum corps ability to think outside the box , anybody can pitch a tent and run a circus. Anybody can tell their audience what their program is all about and how they should take it . BAC has taken on a totally different approach this year , that can be a game changer, providing fans and judges the opportunity to look beyond the obvious and experience a program in a very different way. Do the great performers of today tell their audience how they should interpret there songs/movies. Take a look at the following if its rubbish just hit the delete button , hopefully it may add a different point of view." " Animal Farm was written by George Orwell, in England on 17 August 1945. The book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalin era in the Soviet Union Orwell, was a critic of Stalinism, which, he believed, had become a brutal dictatorship, and enforced by a reign of terror., Orwell described Animal Farm as a satirical tale against Stalin Old Major, the old boar on the Manor Farm, summons the animals on the farm together for a meeting, ( in 1970 they called all the drum corps together for a meeting) during which he refers to humans ( schlecter , American legion , VFW ) as parasites and teaches the animal s( the corps ) a revolutionary song called Beasts of England ( this song beast of England is what latter became my darling clementine). When Major dies, the two young pigs, Snowball and Napoleon, assume command and consider it a duty to prepare for the Rebellion. The animals revolt and drive the irresponsible farmer Mr. Jones ( schlecter and company )from the farm, renaming it "Animal Farm".( Drum Corps International) They adopt Seven Commandments of Animalism, the most important of which is, "All animals are equal." ( all corps are equal ) Snowball ( DCI ) teaches the animals ( Corps)to read and write, while Napoleon educates young puppies on the principles of Animalism Drum Corps). Food is plentiful, and the farm runs smoothly. The pigs ( certain high performing corps ) elevate themselves to positions of leadership and set aside special food items, ostensibly for their personal health. Napoleon and Snowball ( the rest of the corps) struggle for preeminence. When Snowball announces his plans to build a windmill, Napoleon ( Hopkins and cohorts ) has his dogs chase Snowball ( Acheson ) away and subsequently declares himself leader of Animal Farm. ( G7) Napoleon enacts changes to the governance structure of the farm, replacing meetings with a committee of pigs ( G7 )who will run the farm.( DCI ). Through a young pig named Squealer, Napoleon claims credit for the windmill idea.( Hopkins and company) The animals (Non G7 corps) work harder with the promise of easier lives with the windmill. When the animals find the windmill collapsed after a violent storm, Napoleon and Squealer convince the animals that Snowball ( Acheson) is trying to sabotage their project. Once Snowball ( Acheson) becomes a scapegoat, Napoleon(G7) begins to purge the farm ( DCI) with his dogs, killing animals he accuses of consorting with his old rival. Beasts of England ( the clementine song)is replaced by an anthem, ( the dark version of conquest ) glorifying Napoleon,( G7) who appears to be adopting the lifestyle of a man. The animals (DCI) remain convinced that they are better off than they were under Mr. Jones. ( Schlecter ) Mr Frederick, one of the neighboring farmers, attacks the farm, using blasting powder to blow up the restored windmill. ( the part of program where they run from mid field to the soloist in the corner and where they start their boxer solo) Though the animals win the battle, they do so at great cost, as many, including Boxer the workhorse, are wounded. Despite his injuries, Boxer continues working harder and harder, until he collapses while working on the windmill. ( their human windmill) Napoleon sends for a van to take Boxer to the veterinary surgeon, explaining that better care can be given there. Benjamin, the cynical donkey who "could read as well as any pig",[9] notices that the van belongs to a knacker,( G7 corp) and attempts a futile rescue. Squealer reports that the van was purchased by the hospital and the writing from the previous owner ( Acheson) had not been repainted. But in reality, Napoleon has sold his most loyal and long-suffering worker for money to buy himself whisky. Years pass, and the pigs start to resemble humans, as they walk upright, carry whips, and wear clothes. The Seven Commandments are abridged to a single phrase: "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". (The current premise of G7 all drum corps are equal ..but.. some drum corps ( G7) are more equal than others). Napoleon holds a dinner party (Tour of Champions) for the pigs( G7) and local farmers, with whom he celebrates a new alliance.( G7) He abolishes the practice of the revolutionary traditions and restores the name "The Manor Farm". ( Comes full cycle back to 1971 ) As the animals look from pigs to humans, they realize they can no longer distinguish between the two.( Schlecter and Hopkins)"
