  1. 2004 Phantom Regiment. I love the horn book and visually I love the guard colors against the white and black corps uniform. 1991 Blue Devils Conversations in Jazz 1993 Blue Devils A Don Ellis Portrait 1989 Star of Indiana British Invasion. 2003 Cavaliers Spin Cycle. My favorite show of the year. 2007 Blue Devils Winged Victory. I think this one was underrated by the fans.
  2. I sat next to a person a couple years ago at a show who was STILL angry because she felt Star of Indiana "decimated" other mid-west corps in 1985 of members and staff. If Frozen had been out then I would have sung that Adele Dazeem song to her.
  3. Blue Water Brass Port Huron, Michigan June 30, 1980 1. 27th Lancers 77.2 2. Madison Scouts 76.0 3. Troopers 63.45 4. Royal Crusaders 53.85 5. Ventures 45.9 6. Oakland Crusaders 45.75
  4. I am right there with you on all of these, especially for Blue Devils (2000!) and Phantom Regiment 2004.
  5. Phantom Regiment 2004 This is a show that really grew on me and now I not only love listening to it, I love watching it as well. I think the guard's russet costume looks beautiful against the white and black of the brass and drums and the red flag at the end is gorgeous in the heart.
  6. 1991 Blue Devils Conversations in Jazz 1993 Blue Devils A Don Ellis Portrait (I don't really know for sure if people hated these two shows, but they don't get talked about a huge amount, IMO) 2001 Cavaliers Four Corners 2007 Blue Devils Winged Victory
  7. Actually the music of Buffy would be awesome...Christophe Beck wrote some great things for that show...you can buy the score on Amazon :)
  8. 1. The Cavaliers 2. Blue Devils 3. Phantom Regiment 4. Holy Name Cadets 5. Bluecoats 6. Santa Clara Vanguard 7. Carolina Crown 8. Blue Knights 9. Blue Stars 10. Boston Crusaders 11. Madison Scouts 12. Glassmen or Crossmen
  9. It's true...they are hiding bags of potting soil under them. Wait until finals when they add water. You have no idea how muddy things will get. It's absurd.
  10. 1. The Cavaliers 2. Blue Devils 3. Phantom Regiment 4. The Cadets 5. Carolina Crown 6. Santa Clara Vanguard 7. Bluecoats 8. Blue Knights 9 Blue Stars 10. Boston Crusaders 11. Glassmen 12. Madison Scouts 13. Crossmen 14. Colts 15. Spirit 16. Troopers 17. Pacific Crest 18. The Academy 19. Mandarins 20. Pioneer
  11. I think the Bluecoats' show needs an Adrianne or Eva Marie Saint character to interact with the boxer to help fill out the story in the slow parts
  12. I really like the Scout's show, but I think the colorguard uniform needs more contrast. Also, I know their show has the word "Night" in it, but I am not sure I like those black flags at the end. Overall though there show is SO much better than at the beginning of the season.
  13. The high cam seems to be a lot closer than in previous shows, which is a good thing. You can actually see the colorguard's uniforms! Is that Dan Potter announcing?
  14. Does anyone else think the announcer is yelling too loud?
  15. I think why NPR's show is so successful is that it tells real stories told by the real people who live them. I think The Cadets' failure is not so much that they are using the NPR show format, but that they are not using a REAL story. This American Life states that it tells real stories, even if they aren't exciting. What they SHOULD have done is to interview all the members, find a story they liked and have them tell that story, instead of making something up. It would feel more heartfelt. Actually, it might be kind of interesting if they used a different person every night so the story was never the same.
  16. Jonathan Elias: The Prayer Cycle Harbison: Three City Blocks Bob Margolis: Terpsichore Frank Zappa: The Dog Breath Variations Corigliano: Gazebo Dances Young: Tempered Steel Grantham: Southern Harmony Alfred Reed: El Camino Real Hearshen: Symphony on Themes of Sousa
  17. For me it's the complete opposite. Last summer when I was in Indy and Kalamazoo, Blue Devils played both of the encores. I had really wanted to hear the Cavaliers play the encore in Indy. Then this year, I figured the Cavaliers would play the encore at the Port Huron show, but the Glassmen got the encore.
  18. Maybe there have not been entire shows devoted to WSS, however many corps have played at least one piece from it in their show, such as Blue Devils 2003 and Madison Scouts 2005. If you go on corpsreps and look up WSS you can see that MANY corps in the 60s and 70s played a song or even a medley from it. Sometimes in the 70s there would be as many as three corps doing at least one selection. It's been done A LOT.
  19. 1. Who do you root for? The Cavaliers, Santa Clara Vanguard, Madison Scouts, and Blue Knights. In previous years, 27th Lancers, Star of Indiana, Suncoast Sound, Freelancers and Velvet Knights. 2. Why do you root for them? I started going to my local drum corps show in Port Huron, MI in 1980 when I was six years old. The favorites that came every year that I loved were Santa Clara Vanguard, Madison Scouts and 27th Lancers. Later on Star of Indiana, Suncoast Sound, Freelancers, Florida Wave and Velvet Knights were added to that mix. Some of my favorite memories: 1980 27th Lancers 1982 Cavaliers rifle line 1982 Les Chatelaines Velvet Knights and Bridgemen at the same show in 1985 1987 Star of Indiana and their circus train 1987 Phantom Regiment's uniforms 1990 Marauders and their enchanted forest 1991 SCV's Miss Saigon 1991 Magic of Orlando's seven person color guard 1992 Southwind's Robin Hood show Retreats After 1992 I was a counselor at a summer camp and did not go to drum corps shows for many years. Even after starting to go to my local show again I did not take much interest in drum corps until I saw The Cavaliers in 2003 perform Spin Cycle. Now I am hooked again and go to several shows a season. I also love the unique look and sound of the Blue Knights. 3. Have you ever been the victim of drum corps "elitism" simply because you did not march? Never. Whenever I go to a show and sit by someone who has marched or has been a staff member, they always seem to enjoy sharing their stories and experiences with someone who has not marched. 4. Have you any professional musical experience of another sort? No.
  20. Because it's NOT simple...you are being passive-aggressive and everyone knows it. At least own up to it.
  21. Music to Slit Your Wrists By: The Fiery Defiant Passion of Gustav Mahler, in four parts [with lots of straight lines]
  22. Something I have been wanting to hear on the field for a while is The Prayer Cycle by Jonathan Elias http://www.amazon.com/Prayer-Cycle-Lawrenc...TF8&s=music Four City Blocks by John Harbison (the recording I have is by the Cincinnati Wind Symphony on the cd "Paradigm." You can find it at http://klavier-records.com/ Lord of the Rings Symphony by Johan de Meij http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Symphonie...TF8&s=music This cd also features "Spartacus" by Jan Van Der Roost and "A Barrie North Celebration" by Andre Jutras Oh and I almost forgot...a Percy Grainger show would be amazing too. The Cavaliers have the second movement of Lincolnshire Posy on their Sounds of Summer cd and it's great.
