  1. I'll be there cheering them on. Gotta love the national audience, not to mention the awesome opportunity for the kids.
  2. In 2009 the Glassmen volunteer bus crashed and the equipment truck was heavily damaged the same night. After the show that night the Colts hornline came by and played for us. For a wide-eyed drum corps rookie that was something else. Also, this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpxBFoNB1_s Playing Clowns for Art's family.
  3. It's absolutely heartbreaking to hear that my first corps, the Glassmen, will not be fielding in 2013. In 2009, the corps gave me a shot, a position I was wholly unqualified for. I was a mess. But, instead of treating that as an impediment, the members and staff went out of their way to help me get up to speed. They chose what was right, not what was easy. Ultimately, that is what this decision is about. The Board had to make a gut-wrenching call, but I believe this was the right decision. If the organization needs a year to gather itself financially, we alumni, fans, friends and supporters must do what needs to be done. The Board as made its call. Now we have a choice. There is no point in sniping or blaming anyone or anything. We must move forward. We must make that right choice to support the Board and support their efforts to get the corps onto solid financial ground. Moreover, we must support ourselves as we work through this difficult development. This is not the end of the Glassmen. Sure, it's a speed bump, and a big one at that. But, as any Glassmen will tell you, it is in those most difficult moments in rehearsal that true excellence is achieved. We can get through this and succeed, but only if we make the right choice.
  4. Some corps, even bigger name ones, will work with you (source: marched 4 seasons with similar academic situation). Those corps might not be the ones your son has been thinking about, so you might want to start reaching out to other world class groups and see who has flexibility.
  5. I wouldn't read too much into that, that's actually pretty typical of the Glassmen website in years past.
  6. They're both gonna play the same show, but with different staff/stylistic approaches.
  7. uh, ok. sure. If by that you mean more popular music, sure, I can agree, to an extent. If by that you mean that arrangements should bankrupt more corps for the sake of playing popular music, no.
  8. I hope not. Having been through this bracket before, I'll say two things. 1. It's tough, and a lot of pressure. Nobody wants to be in the years when your corps dropped out of finals, especially if they've been in for the past few years. Definitely more pressure than I felt at another corps later when we were fighting for a medal. 2. It's fun. It pushes you. Drum corps is all about getting better, but having that visceral motivation of potentially ending your season a day earlier pushes you even harder. I think that the level of performance of all corps has risen quite a bit in the last 5-10 years, and I'd have to say that the fight to get into finals is part of that across the board movement.
  9. Wow. Fantastic article. Really gets at what drives drum corps kids these days and how great it is to meet people like yourself on the road. Kudos.
  10. We were (briefly) taught a method at a Top 12 team in 2010 in which we would breathe, enter for a second, then breathe again and play for as long as we could. There was some name for it, never really touched it again after realizing how bad it sounded.
  11. Cadets 2002. I'm in a bit of Americana thing today considering the date, so here goes: Not so unnoticed, but I thought it was really cool that the tuba player who fell IMMEDIATELY sprinted back to a rapidly spinning form within just a couple of seconds: you fall down, you get right back up and keep on going. When the flag is raised in the ballad and the corps recites the bit of the Pledge of Allegiance, the judge who was closest to the flag put his hand on his heart and recited the verse as well. Chills. Of course, there is the bit at the very very end, after the show is over, in which the Madison FD station across the street sounded sirens and bells. Very very cool. Drum corps is a really great way to be proud of being American.
  12. They should do whatever they think is smartest for them. For me, I just hope they keep performing at the level they are.
  13. An open class group that managed to fill up to 150 in its second year. Don't know much more about them.
  14. That was a big thing for the Santa Clara girls for a while - not so much as of late. Regular show hair. Males clean-shaven.
  15. Pretty sure the green patches say DCI Natl Finalist until the switch to the Div I/II/III format, and then they switched again in '08 with the World/Open format. Winning years say 'champion' down the stripe.
  16. ...well, yeah, some DCI groups still do, and then are fined and reprimanded for it.
  17. awesome. is there a way to get it as a pdf or ebook (with or without the audio)? it would be easier to read through offline while on the road. just a thought.
