  1. They tend to release the schedule during Thanksgiving week. I got wind of the Wichita show overnight on July 16. Save the Date: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 Drums Across Kansas! Featuring 2012 DCI Champions Blue Devils, Madison Scouts, Boston Crusaders, Spirit of Atlanta, Glassmen, Cascades and Pioneer! It's going to be FANTASTIC!
  2. We (Silver Sabres) took school buses to area shows (within Kansas) but if we traveled out of state or to a larger show we took chartered Trailways buses.
  3. I was a rook-out way back when, but it was worth it. I agree with Sam: It doesn't matter where you march....just MARCH!
  4. My votes have been cast, and the Crusaders got one of mine.
  5. FALSE ! I met the young lady about a year later. She was introduced to me by a friend who marched in Spirit.
  6. I'm with Sam, JUST MARCH ! Being 15, you have a long time left to march. If you don't make the cut the first year, look into marching Open Class, you can get a lot of experience there. I was a rook-out myself, and kick myself often for not marching before then. I'm planning on going to Finals this year for the first time in over 30 years. It's still in my blood !
  7. Arrgone Rebels: Cadet to the Black Tunic tops and white pants.
  8. I met Ed while I was a photographer/writer for DCW back in the late 70's. We shared a few brewskis over the years. I had the honor of providing him several photos for his "Trivial" column, some of which cause a bit of a stir. I'll never forget the trip from Birmingham to Jacksonville Alabama for the contest up there. We were in 2 vans crusing up the interstate, when the call came over the CB that the other van had run out of beer. The van I was riding in pulled along side the other at about 75 mph and we belted somebody in for safety as they leaned out of the moving vehichle to pass beers to the other van. I can't recall which van Ed was in, but it was an experience never since duplicated. RIP Ed, you will be missed.
  9. '77&'78 Salina Silver Sabres: Mark Baker Early 80's Hutchinson Sky Ryders: Roger Luty (love to the little guys from the midwest !)
  10. Show them some clips of Bex ! http://s108.photobucket.com/albums/n37/buttongod_2006/?action=view&current=beccabronze.jpg
  11. Good luck, Steve, with the new venture.I'm signed up ! I wrote and shot for DCW from 1978-1980. It allows me the claim of "internationaly published writer/photographer" My Uncle Ken, was one of Steve's first instructors back with the Jets; the feeder corps of the Sky Ryders. Steve told me about a year or so, he had a nice visit with Uncle Ken before the Hutchinson show. Like I said, good luck "boss" in this new adventure.
  12. When I worked at a camera store, we often said, "It's not the camera, it's the lens." Try to get a DSLR which you can change lenses. You'll need a bit of telephoto lens unless you want all wide shots. Get the fastest lens you can afford. Just tell your salesperson what you want to shoot, and ask them what to get.
  13. I recall going up against "The Hornets" at a show in West Chicago back in '77. Lineup was Fox Valley Raiders, Emerals Knights, Silver Sabres, Pioneer, Knights, Skokie Imperials and 'Da Hornets. *Ok, I cheated....used fromthepressbox.com
  14. We seemed to hang out a lot at pizza places. Usually either The Scheme or Godfathers. Many a pitcher was consumed after rehearsal.
  15. Actually, the Argonne Rebels did it back about 1978 or 79. They had been wearing thier Aussie hats and tunic tops all season, but dug out the old cadet uniforms for the KS American Legion championship show in Hutch that year. Caused quite the stir in the stands.
  16. "It's the best performance you'll ever see on a football field, without having to endure a football game"
  17. My daughter marches in a band of about 120, and they have defeated much larger BOA bands. Size is not ALWAYS important ! (you might search on that site that shall remain nameless for TWCB, or Carmen)
  18. I recall going to a local show (Salina, KS) in about 1974..Kingsmen were there. Had band commitments 74-76. Marched Salina Silver Sabres 1977. Wrote and shot for DCW 78-80. Been a fan ever since. Introduced my daughter to the activity in the last year or so. Don't know if she will march.
  19. Because Drum Corps music must be obscure. (for the most part)
  20. buttongod_ks for me. various topics, occasionaly witty !
