  1. Show Title: "France, 1793" Music features: "Hymne a la Victoire" Luigi Cherubini Highlight of show: Beheading of Louis XVI. :-D
  2. Not really a coincidence; any homogeneous group of instruments (voice choir, brass choir, saxophone choir) with great intonation will have that really cool "one-ness" to the sound. The vocorder/autotuned voice is perfectly in tune so you can hear all the intervals interacting with the exact correct "beats" as each note's frequencies collide or accentuate the others'. The closer a live ensemble gets to that, the more apparent that affect becomes.
  3. I seem to remember a couple people trying to do something like that... can't remember...
  4. I find this point very interesting! One thing I'd like to ask is, What's wrong with being a spectacle as long as your organization brings joy to audiences and amazing life experiences for your members? After their America show, which I'm sure was emotionally and creatively taxing for the staff, then what's wrong with sacrificing some of their aesthetic sensibilities for a year? After all, the debate over whether drum corps is a sport or an art keeps coming up. Regardless of the answer, there's a blurred line there.... and sports have no concern with aesthetics. So I'd say drum corps have a choice between spectacle and aesthetics each year, and based on our opinions and our own aesthetic values, we can decide whether we enjoy the show or not.
  5. lol.... "choreooograpyyy!" not sure if you selected this because of the song or just the idea that corps tend to do more dancing than marching... either way, i almost choked on my pea salad.
  6. First of all, it's been discussed on here ad nauseam that you can't run a corps on will alone, especially not successfully for any length of time. Second of all, calling anyone gutless and weak for deciding NOT to start up a corps after weighing all the options and making a prudent business decision seems silly to me. Just sayin'
  7. This reminds me of the Ship of Theseus paradox... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus
  8. This. If a corps wins a championship, it's their field. I think it's classy... 'course, I may be biased. I remember when we had to wait for an obnoxious amount of time while we waited for one or two lingering corps to clear the field. I can understand wanting to enjoy the fact that it's your last time on the field with the corps... just don't be rude about it. :-)
  9. A really telling experiment: I took 30 of my kids down to see the show. Some were really high up and off to the side, some were in the first row (ugh, speakers... aimed at my head... ugh). Took a poll when we got on the bus. "Who was your favorite corps tonight? Was it... " 1st - Cavaliers!... all of them erupted in cheers! 2nd - Crown!... half the kids fan girl/boy'd, the rest were very appreciative 3rd - Academy - they loved the Union Jack at the end (the kids learned what Union Jack was last night... woo education!) 4th - Colts (lots of discussion on that one :-)) 5th - Blue Stars - they got it, they just didn't seem to dig it 6th - Pioneer 7th - Blue Devils... 0 votes!??!? I think I may have messed it up by telling about their history and how they were the winning-est corps in modern history and they are unreal/ridiculously good. They felt let down, expecting a life changing experience... I take the blame for that one. Good thing my kids aren't DCI judges!
  10. I'd actually really like to see some videos of rehearsals posted, not just runs. I find it fascinating what corps can accomplish in limited amounts of time. I saw in the Cadets thread where they had everything planned down to 5 minute increments. It was awesome to see. On that topic, even if it's not a video, are there any blogs out there or websites that folks can recommend concerning rehearsal etiquette?
  11. Just saw the "Drums Along the Rockies" show on FN... this show is so awesome! I was caught off guard by the soft ending too, but I love it! They time trip off into the future but have the decency to say goodbye to us! :-) Would be interesting if they picked up right where they left off like they time tripped into next year! (yeah yeah, Cadets 06... i know...) lol... can GE points be awarded retroactively? :-)
  12. I thought the op said "Marco Rubio" and I was intrigued. lol
  13. When everyone goes black, you go back to white to be different. In about 15 years, it'll go all the way back around again!
  14. Jeff Saktig... for President! Then you can do a whole show with just drill and no music... and at the end, be like, "That is what he said...."
  15. lol BozzlyB wasted no time :-) I'd turn to any channel if they were playing some drum corps! Well, almost any...
  16. Probably costs a billion dollars for weekend rehearsal space. Why base a corps in NYC when you can base it in Jersey for half the cost? ... or Allentown, for that matter...?
  17. Awesome! I saw them at the Evening Parade a month ago at the Marine Barracks in DC... fantastic!
  18. Just wanted to express my appreciation: The running block right before the solo = ballsy!
  19. I'd also add that that is a very "Cadets" reason to do something. :-) '99 comes to mind...
  20. I think they want him to be as non-distracting as possible (cream suit thing) while still having him in uniform (maroon jacket, gold cummerbund, etc.). Maybe put him in the white uniform like the pit. That could work. Or maybe even a cream two-piece suit with a maroon vest and tie. The hybrid thing he has on right now is not very attractive......
  21. Just watched them again on FN. I LOVE this show! The use of the drum set throughout, especially in Carmen, is so tasteful. I do agree, N. E. Brigand, that the synth bass could be reduced a bit. If you're going to use it, support the brass, don't draw attention to the fact that there's a bass boost! My reaction should be, "wow, those tubas are putting out some SOUND!" not, "why have tubas at all, man?!??".
  22. I also loved the guard girl touch! I think the story is great... the beginning made me uncomfortable but once I realized that he'd killed off the other characters before this show takes place, my interest was piqued. I'm a sucker for a dark show. I saw the show on FN and I think this could be an enjoyable show, but I'm not sure it will be competitive... yet. I think there needs to be some resolution to the set up by the end; if you have the character, utilize him to his full potential.
