  1. I agree that corps directors as a rule aren't good at the business aspect of things... but why should we expect them to be? Isn't that one of the reasons why DCI exists? To help the corps directors on the business side so they can focus on running the corps?
  2. A required rock out section with a minimum decibel level??? ...no? ...okay...
  3. I think this would work, actually! It would really spice things up and that "slotting" thing would become much less of a bear. But then, you forever lose the "local" and "youth" aspects of the activity, at least where DCI World Class is concerned. You'd have to have a corresponding "Minor League" (Open Class?), wouldn't you? I think the only real way you could do the "draft" thing in the existing structure is with money or staff and other resources, not the kids/performers. The few lowest placing corps get a large share of the profits, pick from a staff pool for that year to help pump them up, etc.
  4. Personally, I know Hop and the other designers will make a decision that is well-reasoned and though-out because the uniform history is so important. If he wants to chance a change to such a beloved and long-standing icon of the corps to further the show, I personally can't wait to see what's in store. Will I be embarrased or thrilled by what I see? Who knows... but I trust the man enough to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'll reserve judgement on whether it was worth it or not for finals night when we see it all come together.
  5. Oooooh, I think I know... starts with a "Schr...."? I wasn't sure he'd make it through the summer. Glad he did!
  6. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
  7. lol... I never knew! I don't feel so lonely now... was it... Tink?
  8. Thanks... it was one of those defining moments in my life... so many hated or loved that door. But I think I'm the only one who actually clobbered it. :-)
  9. Alright, I've got to do it... In 2005, we performed at Westchester (pretty sure) where the stadium was open on one side to nothing but trees. When it got dark, that side of the stadium was pitch black. During Liquid a couple sets before the "fish", I slid left across the field right in front of The Door. Well, the side of The Door is freakin' black... so I'm flying across the field, looking through my contra, trying to find/pick out the door from the equally black forest beyond, when... WHAM! I bounced off and stood still for a split second, flipping out. Then, I was able to sprint backward with my horn up the whole time to catch up to the form before I hurt someone. But man, that was rough. The other contra guys ragged me the rest of the season. :) Good times.
  10. Hey Mr. Boo! Huge fan! Anyway, it looks like the thread has been hijacked and has become the "Everything Superbowl" thread. Cool with me... I was actually looking to see what DCP's reaction was to Christina's frack. Question: what did the halftime designers use? Pyware? Freehand?
  11. People worry that the current direction of drum corps has become too geared toward the art of it and not enough toward the money-making "ooo that was loud!" side of it. As awesome as the products that corps're churning out may be, it's hard for the uninitiated to get into it. Stupid idea: Make all DCI corps do "football audience" shows except for two corps who are picked at random. They are allowed to be "artsy" that year. They can pass if they want to!
  12. You know, every time I see a live show, I point out how much I LOVE the Boston Crusaders crisp uniforms with the chainy things... And everyone around me goes, "Oh, yeah, uh huh... I can see that." ... I need new friends.
  13. I'm 100% with you on this one! Also like to add that Star 93's Medea does it for me, while the original doesn't... maybe it's the added percussion stuff that kicks it up a notch.
  14. i think any new avenue to set drum corps apart from marchig band in the public eye is worth considering. cool idea! :-)
  15. Craig, you are awesome! I am a band director and have been reading DCP for a couple years... one of the reasons local corps have gone down in number is because bands have been growing in schools over the past several decades. That's all well and good, but there's something to be said for music performing ensembles that are independent of the school system... I for one know that music educators like myself would be really excited if there was a local corps participating in your circuit! I'd send ALL my middle and high school brass and percussion kids to get in on a corps if one existed here. The rent to own idea is PERFECT! It's how my program exists at all. Great idea!
  16. I agree with the majority of posters here. I wouldn't trade my life-altering experience with Cadets, but marching in a DCA corps really showed me what drum corps should be all about. So if you can march DCI, do it. There's nothing like it. But if you can't, you won't regret coming home to DCA.
