  1. Oregon needs a surge too... currently running 25th when open is included... ouch.
  2. Yes, skating really comes to mind as something that seems to work the same way. The 'component' scores can really add up for skaters. Things like deep edges and other skating skills, transitions, artistic interpretation, etc.
  3. What makes a great Devils Show? Why, it's the Devils Swagger - of course! Also, loud. It must be loud to be great. I loved Metamorph SO very much. It became one of my top five of all time. It really got me to appreciate the inner workings, history, traditions, motifs that all make BD the amazing corps that it is. Didn't hurt that I spent a face-melting afternoon watching a full ensemble rehearsal of that show. I was able to key in on their process.
  4. This must have been a bunch of stress for you. Well done!!!!
  5. Genesis and Oregon Crusaders could use some welcoming too, Allentown! (no housing sites :(
  6. Why did this predicament happen in the first place? Did the original housing fall through?
  7. I looked and looked and looked again. I could not see. Is it the backfield DM?
  8. Shouldn't there also be a thread called "hey flo, please DON'T show..." I don't need to see any more guard/featured dancers running off into the tunnel while the rest of the corps is still performing!
  9. Nice run tonight in Atlanta, OC. Congrats to the color guard - 17th!!
  10. There is a lot I could say about tonight... and it has probably already been said. So I will say just one thing: Madison's show really grew on me tonight.
  11. I said this earlier, that OC is not a lock for semis. Someone on here strongly disagreed with me... but I stand by my assertion. Yes, the competition is just too strong at thNopeis level.Nope
  12. I was noticing that each INT is an hour long. That is a bit unusual, isn't it?
  13. Looking at open and world rankings combined, OC is in 23rd right now. I don't understand what is happening to this show that, early on, seemed early like it would develop into something more competitive in the lower tier.
  14. I vote for Troop. This is my favorite show from them in awhile. I love the way they use Both Sides Now as a dividing point for both the storyline and the music. The Americana identity is still firmly entrenched, yet it comes off as a modern drum corps show. It deserves to be on the big screen. That being said, I wouldn't be upset if Pac Crest snuck into that 15th spot. I've said it many times this year and I'll say it again. I REALLY LIKE THEIR SHOW!
  15. It almost plays like an over-the-top stage show that might be seen at a gigantic Vegas venue... and I mean this in the best possible way. It most certainly has a different sound AND look than any other corps. My dear old mother is a big jazz fan and I'm really excited for her to see this show on Saturday. It will knock her socks off. True confession: I want to be the singer in that show.
  16. I hope OC is getting a replacement for the injured featured dancer. If not, that will hurt them. I really like PC's show though... a lot of charm, nuance and better execution.
  17. Congrats to PC on another great run. The success they are achieving is well deserved! This is a very competitive year and the PC organization has risen to the occasion.
  18. Another thread is begging flo to get a shot of PC's dancing DM!
  19. I'd be happy if flo just cut to the actual thing that is happening more consistently. It is a little better this year, but I still see shots of quads not being played while off camera I can hear the snares. Or, why show the featured dancer running deep into the tunnel before the final notes of the show are heard? Some of the details they choose to shoot make me scratch my head, like guard changing flags - something I never used to see when it was fan network. But yes, I'd love to see PC's dancing DM! Let's keep our fingers crossed.
  20. There are some super fun shows in that 16-20 tier, right alongside Music City. Pac Crest has fielded a delightfully charming, nuanced, feel good show, one of my top picks this year for entertainment value. OC's creepy take on 'The Shining' is starting to gel. These are not to be missed shows!
  21. Which, I believe, is the only fair way to handle two very different scenarios.
  22. Drum corps is not technically a sport BUT it seems to me to be very similar to figure skating, which IS a sport. In figure skating, routines are judged on artistic quality and technical components, just like drum corps. Music choice, drill/choreography/interpretive movement, ease of flow, tricks, execution - both skating and drum corps depend on these elements to score high. The difference is, in skating, a top ranked skater could flub one or more Axels or Lutzes that would severely affect his or her score, whereas in drum corps, those big train wrecks just don't happen, or if they do, with, say a missed rifle catch, it only involves a member or two, and doesn't ruin the whole performance enough to tank the score. IMO that is why the pecking order remains fairly locked all season. I sometimes wish huge upsets would happen regularly as well. Once in awhile they do, but it is certainly not common.
