  1. I just realized this was my dad's mother and father. That explains a lot about how he turned out and why he was such a ###### dad. 😬
  2. In a sick, twisted, but wholly honest way... could we really celebrate the first 50 years of DCI without having an abuser/abuse situation? It's been as much a part of DCI as company fronts.
  3. I've seen BD win guard on Sat night because of the judge multiple times (1986 for one). Who the judge is has a big effect on those final few tenths.
  4. Percussion judge with Phantom in '89, field visual with Star in '93, Colorguard with BD in multiple years (winning)... one judge has made a difference both good and bad several times.
  5. I think all of you are missing the main reason Finals is a one-shot deal: it's a competition/sport. The NFL champion isn't decided by an average winning margin over the course of the playoffs. Using your average score method, we miss out on Raiders over Redskins in '84. You march and play all summer long to get to Saturday night... one chance to put your absolute BEST performance out there and try and take the title. THAT is what made 2008 the greatest result in DCI history. That is also what made 2015 a disappointing result as well. Finals night rewards the bold and brave... and punishes the hesitant and unsure.
  6. From what I've read, the dome suggestion by the mayor is a last-ditch, Hail Mary attempt at keeping the Bears in the city. According to the team, there is NO chance they're staying. The dome would be an attempt to use Soldier Field as a multi-purpose facility, but I don't know what backing there would be to spend $2 BILLION on a place with no permanent resident, i.e. sports franchise.
  7. ^^^^^^ THIS I did an approximation of the math back when the schedule first came out. MBS makes about 60% more money from the LC concert than they would with DCI. Not as much hotel business, but that's not the stadium management's job.
  8. This may sound bizarre, but there is a relevant parallel to the Colts' situation this year: Pixar and "Cars." The original idea for the movie sucked, and they knew it. All the upper level guys decided to take a road trip and actually drive down Route 66 and see it for themselves. They were gone for 3 months! When they came back, they tore up the entire project and started over, using what they had learned first hand from the people along Rt 66. The result was a movie that, while not 100% accurate, truly captured the essence and feel of what it was like living and working on Rt 66 before and after the interstate highway came through. I'm not saying the Colts' design staff should spend a month in an Asian community, but a week or so would have probably made a huge difference.
  9. Okay, here's a thought: have every WC corps perform the EXACT SAME SHOW! Drill and all. Whoever gets judged performing it the best wins. That renders the design off the scoresheet and allows the judging to be about what the MM's do and not the staff. The staff judging and awards could be done in choosing which show they all perform.
  10. Seriously, somebody in logistics needs to watch The Weather Channel. It's hot everywhere in July, but OK and TX??? How about MA, NY/NY and PA? Let me guess... both shows tonight are on artificial turf aren't they?
  11. Considering BDB and SCVC have placed in the top 16 at semis before, that's not surprising.
  12. From what I remember, he spent a good portion of the summer practicing his french horn in private. The rest was spent working out to stay buff and getting oiled/painted up!
  13. 1979 was the last time Blue Stars placed in the top 5 of a caption at Finals (performance brass) I'd say there's a good chance they do that this year. It's truly an awesome sight to see Blue Stars currently in 6th spot after last night. Patience, perseverance, and real support in action.
  14. Legally, you are correct. Practically... oh yeah it is. I went to high school with three women girls who initiated sexual relationships with teachers. They weren't groomed. Two were trading sex for grades and the other just dug older guys. I had a 15 year old classmate with a 24 year old Marine boyfriend... among the 14 guys she had been dating sleeping with. These girls weren't victims of grooming behavior... believe me, no one had a chance of taking advantage of them. They were just raised with too much money and too much freedom.
  15. Tell me about it! I was working for BlueLinx (biggest building materials wholesaler in the US) from 2005 to 2012. We starting feeling the effects of the housing crash in 2006. By 2008 were in the middle of a full fledged meltdown.
  16. https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/cobb-county/former-christian-school-band-teacher-sentenced-sexual-relationship-with-student/6554TDTO7FEGZCN7EG5V44XZJM/ This case highlights that rule. As I understand it, the girl was a 14 year old sophomore when the relationship started, and she was a willing participant, never cooperating with the investigation.
  17. It might not still be the case, but in the metro Atlanta area for about 10-15 years, all it took to buy a home was 1%-2% down. In some cases I read, they rolled the 2% downpayment into the loan and so all the buyers paid for were closing costs.
  18. Well, no. But you'd better believe my kids will know how to invest money!
  19. You mean like SCV in 2018? or 1992? Yeah, I'm there too. But then you also have SOA in '87. Those screamers were completely necessary and part of the appeal of the song. BD and Madison have always had screamers, but they were very deftly integrated into the chart, not added for effect. Besides, screaming on a Bb trumpet is NOT the same as screaming on a G bugle. 🤯
  20. That wouldn't be the immortal Sandra Opie, would it?
  21. My father-in-law's retirement portfolio has averaged better than 15% over the course of 40 years (closer to 20% actually.) It can be done with effort and the right analysis tools. 🤑
  22. Great observation about Cadets in '16. That show was a hot mess that got major changes every other week all through the season. They never had a chance to show what they could do. I understand your viewpoint on it being subjective. However, when I think of great BD horn lines, I start with the 1979-1981 units that never lost a brass SUBCAPTION in 3 years, and played some incredibly memorable music. I guess I lost track that the time interval mentioned was the 2010's.
  23. 18 year old invests $5k and gets a 15% annual return. That's a 5% downpayment on a $400k house at age 28. Now that I look at that, that's a lousy investment. Better to go to Vegas for a weekend!
  24. 🤨 *looks at recap sheets* 3rd in music GE, 3rd in brass, 2nd in ensemble Honestly, looking at the recaps, 2011-2013 were subpar years for BD from a brass perspective. From 1975 to 2014: 15 times the best horn line, 37 times in the top 3, finished outside the top 3 in brass only 3 times ('87, '95, '05). BD has the ultimate high standards when it comes to horns.
