  1. Ballads are cool and I hope they choose a really compelling piece of music, but for me the music you come on with and exit with is as important if not more so than a great ballad.. IMHO the Bluecoats first ending last season made more sense musically than the obvious GE boosting "hey jude"..so from the first hit on, keep the MUSIC exciting whatever the genre
  2. I know we're talking about overage performers illegally making it to the field of competition ...for whatever reason....But BITD when senior corps were the logical progression for mm's after ageing out the opposite happened with some senior corps, by allowing middle teens to march with men and women..talk about a growing up fast!!!..I don't know if there was a formal minimum age for senior corps but if they needed to fill a hole, age was often overlooked(particularly if you had a beard).Lol..I don't know when all-age drum corps started but there was a time when senior drum corps was the BOMB and aspiring to march there was laudable
  3. A show concept featuring the music of miles davis. john coltrane, chick corea and for all you jersey cats , wayne shorter...progression from be-bop to now..I don't know about the design, just the music...but what a great array of music to choose from..yes?
  4. Congratulations on the staff hires..their street cred established, I look forward to a successful season..HOWEVER after last season's pre season hype ...I'm from Missouri !..Peace
  5. Not that it"s important, but I liked the Bluecoats original closer...seemed to be a very classy way to end..I figured they needed to add more GE as BD got closer, but when I first saw that ending BOW it was cool
  6. It must be psychologically difficult to maintain a fan friendly show , which I think most on here would agree was the situation Bluecoats found themselves..Difficult, because the plaudits were ongoing from day one of competition..They "KNEW" they were loved and may have had a letdown by finals because they (particularly after thurs) probably felt good about their prospects for FRI. and SAT..The Devils , on the other hand, did what they always do...Clean, Clean and Clean....By Saturday, even I could see the improvement the Devils made over the last two weeks.,,So, most memorable show=Bluecoats..Most complete show=Blue Devils..IMHO..peace
  7. my favorite field of dreams was the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City...All of NYC would be there because drum corps was still about neighborhoods..(the Dream) ....least favorite location was I think Memorial stadium in Baltimore?
  8. 1. Bloooo 2 Pacific Crest 3 Madison Scouts 4 Blue Knights 5 Crossmen 6 BD 7 Cavies 8 Boston 9 SCV 10 Crown...
  9. Maybe I missed the obvious..Did the blue devils take their name from the swing era big band?
  10. It"s been referenced before: shows are becoming increasingly boiler plate..even though the talent is great , the predictability of what you MUST see regardless of theme and when you see it, makes the EXPERIENCE too predictable..Not that the music isn't challenging and not that the shows aren't done well, they are...the mm's kick ###..But if I see another AWAKENING from sleep, birth or death with the hero/heroine eventually be hoisted high I think I'll puke..sometimes I get the feeling that the shows' gratuitous aspects are not unlike sex scenes in R rated movies...anyway all the above is IMHO..peace
  11. If it's just about the music: Pacific Crest ( chinatown) and BD ( A true Passion)
  12. 5K? wow that is a lot of money..I agree wholeheartedly that the mm's should at least be aware of what they're getting into..when I marched dues were like 50 bucks a month...there were also dinosaurs still walking the earth!!
  13. Note : Cadet fan here...BUT I "ve always admired them because they seemed a bit ahead of the curve innovatively..now they copy, which may or may not be a good thing..I know we can't turn the clock back to 82 or 83, nor do I want to, BUT TAKE A CHANCE at being outrageous..BK may never medal but they take chances.( sometimes it works)..Make your own statement even if it doesn't win ..leave people with something memorable and the rest will take care of itself..peace
  14. Madison Scouts playing " Ice Castles"....I980..drum major takes out banner at the end during long chord..And Pacific Crest playing the love theme from " Chinatown"..simply beautiful!
  15. Maybe it"s just me but the screaming soloist {SCV) who goes for the really high note doesn"t really add to the piece of music..plus when it doesn't work out so well it reminds me of "THE FAIL"...I don't think they need it..IMHO
  16. Thank you for my favorite moment in drum corps this year.." Chinatown" theme is not only hauntingly beautiful but the trumpet player showed a mastery over the lower range of his horn...keep improving ..looking forward to seeing you in INDY.
  17. are their weather conditions on average, better than those in the midwest and east at comparable times?
  18. What are the number of shows on average that are cancelled annually because of weather conditions?..I know this might be controversial but climate change ( if one is to believe) changing weather patterns in the midwest and northeast might make outdoor venues problematic ..so either require outdoor venues to be on other than grass or roll back the race for prop supremacy..I know the latter is highly unlikely but for those of us who might only be able to afford 1 or 2 shows a year, it"s a bummer to spend time and resources to watch a standstill..peace
  19. Better than Atlanta? That the BOTW refrain is out helps..you can do better..go cadets
  20. For whatever it"s worth...Madison received one of the loudest ovations in Atlanta..I mention this because they ENTERTAINED!! They may not compete with the top corps this year but as long as they ENTERTAIN I'll remain an avid fan
  21. Your rendition of the theme from CHINATOWN blows me away!! Not only does it remind me of the more melodic days of drum corps but the tune itself has changes that a musician can appreciate..Well done..keep getting better!
  22. thank you..having played both was not difficult..as a matter of fact, my peers found it hip that I could play on both..their curiosity led many to eventually joining a drum corps
  23. I think it evolves until I'm no longer reminded that I'm watching a production on a FOOTBALL field ( ala Cirque du Soleil)..only problem is , I can't afford Cirque tickets..hope Drum Corps doesn't become so exclusive economically that the average fan can no longer afford to attend LIVE performances..FLO is O.K. but Live is still the best way to appreciate Drum Corps.IMO
