I was truly entertained by drum corps in Summer 2011 for the first time in decades.

It all depends on what happens in May when the judges get together and decide who gets to win.

Is it possible that there is a list of schools to be used, and they are in the process of assigning specific corps to specific locations? Just throwing that out there.

I never witnessed that before or since." Michael, hate to correct you, and someone else may have already, but Spirit didn't compete until 1977, and didn't play "Let it Be Me" until 1978..... Of course, homage needs to be paid to the end of SCV in 1982, the Bottle Dance ("Oh, my my....they're pulling out all the stops tonight!").

Hahah! I was in that section! And there was a period of time when they were discussing moving us to the end zone. I was gonna be ready to fight them on that. Or demand a refund. I'da been calling my friend the county solicitor for advice on that one!

"2nd season"? "DCI South"? Those are blasts from the distant past!!!!

I can relate to all of you...I have driven 4+ hours, paid big bucks for tickets, and had my experience ruined by idiots. I embarrass my family sometimes, but I ain't puttin' up with it no more! If the offending parties are seated behind me, I simply wait till a point when they seem to be temporarily paying attention, and I stand up in front of them. When they complain "I can't see", my answer is "then we're even, because I can't hear".

Are they World Class or Open Class?

Probably cheapest to fly on Southwest from Birmingham to anywhere in TX. (Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, etc.) You should be able to carry what you need on a plane....plus SW is still the only major carrier that's not charging excessive luggage fees.

Fail. It sucked. Sounds picky, but in a 5-corps show, there are issues during 3 shows? Not a good performance level. Missed Cadets' and Crown's ballads almost completely. Made my decision for me. I won't be investing. In addition, I think the next scheduled broadcast should be free, as well.

Wish the judges would do that....

Okay, this is absolutely the WORST time of the night to be running an ad for the DCI Fan We Can't Provide Enough Bandwidth to Prevent Issues Network! They just helped me make my decision NOT to pay money for that!

Start time is 6PM Eastern. This is part of an MENC event, with special performances pre-show. The DCI portion actually starts at 7PM Eastern. There are only 5 corps performing, so it will be a relatively short show. But, hey, it's free!

Spirit's show is complete. And you're gonna be surprised if you think they're gonna score 50-something....

1. If it runs on electricity, it's not allowed. 2. If an instrument is not brass or percussion, it's not allowed. 3. A judges is not allowed to know a corp's scores from previous shows. Ever. He or she gets a clean slate and judges a show on its merits, that night only, not as compared to a week ago or based on the fact that he or she got fired from corps XYZ in 1982 and it's time for revenge, or "this corps was not very good in the mid-90's, so they can't be good now", or "They ended last season with a 72.5, so there's no way they get a 75.5 this early in this season". In other words, slotting is illegal and punishable with lifetime banishment from judging. 4. Did I mention no electronics and no woodwinds or strings? 5. Am I cynical? Yep. I miss the days when DRUM and BUGLE corps was just that, not drum and bugle (and synthesizer and narrator and fat girl singing and fake radio show and political correctness and pushing my "love the earth" agenda and violin and saxophone and who cares if we entertain the audience, as long as we're artists, and "let's be just like BOA") corps.

Trust me, Spirit is gonna surprise a lot of people soon.

Doesn't matter that much, in a few years they'll have an electronic robot drum major that you just plug in and let run. Tempos, cues, everything, programmed in. This will free up one more member to play electric bugle. Or maybe battery-operated electronic drumset.
