  1. Not to be too drum-geeky but... That's an all-maple shell, right? I thought the marching drums from Mapex were the Saturn shells (maple/walnut)?
  2. Way Way Way past my undergraduate degree...I continue to list one youth accomplishment on my resume- Member, DCI world champion Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. It never fails to generate a question or two along the lines of the lines that Mr. Boo made, and I believe makes my life experience unique.
  3. if not Madison... Late 80's contemporaries- VK, SCV 90's- Do something like my Colts buddy Pete who started at BK when they finished in 16th place and aged out in finals in a superior drumline 2000's- ummm Cavies (duh) Now?- dang it, it's still Scouts!
  4. I've seen it...once. I stayed one night at the Madison corps office before the Memorial Day camp in 1990, and watched a high cam of '88 semis Scouts show (THE show of the season, IMO). I'm pretty sure it contained all of the top 25. That's a vid I'd love to see again (including many of the non-top 5 corps).
  5. I am supporting the Madison Scouts and the young man I know who made the horn line this year to honor everything the Brotherhood has done for me over the last 25 years (MYNWA). I am also going to the souvie booths of the Blue Knights, Boston Crusaders, Colts, Pioneer, Cascades, Crossmen, etc... because I love drum corps. I will not go to the MiM show in my area or support those corps participating... because they think they are the "G7"
  6. A very good friend of mine has a son who made the baritone line! MYNWA
  7. He's young enough to march and his bio says he plays trumpet... Think of the publicity!!!
  8. Look here- I was there and you definately had a compound fracture, didn't realize it and got up and marched the rest of the show before passing out in the parking lot. that's what I heard in 1984 so it must be true!!!
  9. Yep. When Madison visited Europe in '88 I remember that some of my brothers had never played a 3 valve horn... DCE used 3 valved horns in G, but everyone I marched with hated them because of increased back pressure (whatever that means, after all I played the kettledrums...). not sure when that started, but when I toured with Beatrix in 1991, we brought our 3 valves with us.
  10. you're new at this photography thing? I can smell the sunscreen and diesel fumes, hear the voice of the staff over the P.A., sense the pushups being done around me... great photos!
  11. I went so far as to contact The Mouse after seeing them a year or 2 after aging out... I think I could hear him laughing and saying "Oh Boy, drummer guy, THAT'll never happen! He He!"
  12. '88 Madison rode yellow school busses for the USA leg of the first tour (maybe 5 shows or so?) because the corps coaches were rented out through the Star bus company- no reason to call them back and then let them sit while we were in Europe. Picked up our usual ride after returning from England (as I recall...dang, 1988 was a long time ago...).
  13. OK, so let's figure out this pit. I'm guessing '81 or '82 (the birth of the pit!) for a few reasons: the Ludwig fiberglass timps (but not marching timps set up on the sideline...spirit? garfield? madison? bd?) the upside-down vibes on the cart (maybe marching vibes on a homemade rack? When is the last time you saw a vibraphone taken to the field upside down?) the gong on the oh-so-easily blown over floor gong stand (definately early pit, probably borrowed, as most things were back then!) My first guess (because of the black jacket of the guy walking on behind the cart, check the patches on the sleeve)... Blue Devils 1981. guard person- please confirm or deny based on the flags on the cart!!!
  14. I'd love to meet the fine human being who broke into my house and emptied my dresser of all the "valuables", including about $40 of my wifes cosmetic jewelry and my 1988 championship ring... I'm sure it's really been important to him.
  15. 1987 Colts had a big ol' heart in the drill and a big ol' heart banner pulled out at the end of the 1987 opener, "Love for Sale"!
  16. OK. Seriously. How big is that bottom bass, and how many Doans pills does it take to carry it around and slug on it? 42"? 44"?
  17. cr@p! I should have said: (besides "devil") America/O Canada- every corps for lots of years Them songs is about country, aint they?
  18. The Devil Went Down to Georgia SOA 1980, 1981 Dutch Boy 1981 Louisiana Southernaires 1981 Connecticut Hurricanes 1981 Jubal 1985 ...that's the only one I can think of...
