  1. From the outside looking in, 2022 was not the competitive or organizational success one might have hoped or even expected from this corps. Covid/sickness and meal issues seemed to plague the corps for parts of the season, leading to a flurry of social media posts from members heading into finals. Some staff have already indicated they are leaving, but so far the biggest announcement is that corps director Mark Richardson is stepping into a strictly executive director role, and is looking for a new corps director to manage the day to day: https://www.arizonaacademy.org/now-hiring-corps-director/ I've always been impressed with The Academy and it's methodical rise to where it is today. Hoping for the best for all and a smoother 2023 ahead!
  2. OBSERVATION: THE ACADEMY with its production of "A World of My Imagination" has returned back (not that is ever left) to the Creation of what many are saying is more Fan Friendly Favorite show. However, I find it concerning that the Corps scoring trajectory is noticeably lagging, compared typically to their previous Top 15 shows. All the Elements are there: From the Classic Look in Purple Tux and Tail Uniforms, to a quite Sophisticated yet familiar Music Book, to an extremely demanding and well executed percussion book and battery, along with it's nearly 40 member guard displaying perhaps it's best command of equipment in performance, that I have personally observed from THE ACADEMY since it's debut in 2004. So why the unusually low/lagging scores. Sadly, I believe I can answer my own question. It's become quite evident that the Curse of the Covid-19+ Virus is the one common denominator, negatively impacting THE ACADEMY and many other Corps performances and scores. Such as the approximately 20+ missing MM from The Academy's Annapolis show and worse the reportedly 40!? missing MM from a recent performance by my beloved "Casper Wyoming Troopers," (who inspired me to march 24" Concert Cymbals in my local Corps back in 1969!) I never "Imagined" that the Corps entertaining "Creation" would see it's score trajectory partially victimized by a Virus. Godspeed to All.

  6. I went to comment on The Academy's send off show tonight and realized there wasn't a thread for them. There is now. Anyway, I can't wait to see the reaction this corps gets in 2 weeks when they unveil their show. I loved what we heard and saw tonight. They have about 2/3's of the show on the field right now, and you can tell they have a lot to add into what's on the field to this point. They leave tomorrow for Page and cooler temps, and the chance to focus and finish putting the rest of the show in before starting to fine-tune the whole production. I'm no expert or anything, and I love my hometown corps. We've put a lot of blood, sweat (Heat Forged is the slogan for a reason!), tears into them over the years and I'm so pleased to see them with a show that has potential to be something amazing come August. Oh, and the mellophone book is frick'n fantastic! Go, Academy!
  7. Hi everyone, This is episode 7 of my match up series. In this episode, we will be looking at the Colts and The Academy. In 2017, both corps experienced changes. New uniforms, new staff, etc. Both corps were neck and neck with eachother. This match up should be very interesting to watch in the 2018. Now it time for you to vote. Who do you think will score and finish higher next season? Vote and well will find out.

  10. After seeing the Blue Stars and Crossmen compete neck and neck with eachother all season this year, I began to wonder which corps might be in that same situation next season where they are right next to each other in terms of scoring and placement. 11. Check out the revealing and appropriately written and titled Michael BOO! 10/26/2016 Tombstone Story on THE ACADEMY. "The Drum Corpse Bride Graveyard Tour", on dci.org I sure hope DCI Releases on dci.org, video from this show as a Halloween Treat to us DCI fans, It was an absolutely amazing performance: Visually, Muscially, Theatrically, Emotionally and SO Corps Fan Satisfying that even legendary DCI Hall of Famer, Announcer was moved to declare that: "DRUM CORPSE INTERNATIONAL Is Proud to Present: THE ACADEMY. ENJOY!
  12. At the end of June, I wrote a review of the Sacramento Moonlight Classic (see below), which included a lot praise for The Academy. Turns out I was correct!! I remember turning to the folks I was with (BD alums) who thought the show was good, but that they wouldn't make finals because it was too "cute." They didn't mean it as a slam to The Academy, but more of a statement that Judges would score them lower. They were so happy to be wrong! :) The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. The show connects so well with the audience, I believe it will be a fan favorite all season. Not only is the show entertaining, it looks beautiful and sounds beautiful. Unchained Melody was one of the most beautiful moments of the entire night. Huge crowd reaction! Call me crazy, but I think this show might be a dark horse to make finals.
  13. Venue: John D. Riggs Stadium 5:30 p.m. Box Office Open 7:30 p.m. Welcome & National Anthem 7:35 p.m. SoundSport 8:02 p.m. Watchmen - Riverside, CA 8:17 p.m. Intermission 8:35 p.m. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA 8:57 p.m. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI 9:19 p.m. The Academy - Tempe, AZ 9:41 p.m. DrumLine Battle Note: All times MST. From what I understand (after comparing times with the wife and checking online), Mesa AZ is on Standard Time. Anyone at the show?
  14. What an incredible show! Huge crowd, every Corps put forth a good show, and the weather cooled down in the evening. A perfect summer evening! Below are my thoughts. Feel free to ask questions. The talent level and performance of ALL corps is simply unreal - if anyone thinks Drum Corps is dying, well... you clearly aren't seeing what I am seeing. Wahoo! I didn't take notes, just writing from memory, so please forgive the lack of detail. Open Class Golden Empire - Bakersfield, CA -This Open Class corps is doing great things! I'm glad they are expanding their tour this year and hope they make it to championships next year. Blue Devils C - Concord, CA -Cute, Adorable. What else can you say? Blue Devils B - Concord, CA -Drumline is insane, rest of the show was good; I enjoyed it, but a lack of "wow moments" for me. Feels like the show has limited room to grow Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA -Great show! I had them slightly ahead of BDB tonight (just checked the scores, I was right!) I think this show has a lot of room to grow World Class Corps Mandarins - Sacramento, CA -They have been on a rise the past few years and continue that trend again this year. They have never looked or sounded this good, this early ever. A very special shout-out to the guard who is MILES ahead of previous years. The corps moves a lot this year which is an improvement from last year. I really wish they would stop using original music, which it is good, I feel like using relatable music might be the hook that pushes them up a few slots. I think they were better than Pacific Crest. It will be interesting to see where this show goes this year. The Academy - Tempe, AZ -Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA In the past, I feel like PC's show design has held this corps back - this year, I think it is much improved. Their show is called UNION and is about how the railroad connected America. I liked it, but I don't think there is enough there to propel the corps forward this year. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI Judas! This show had a,lot of power. Madison is starting very strong this year. Some good moments, especially when the crowd gets into the familiar music from Jesus Christ Superstar. Emotional show. Big step up this year for Madison. Very strong guard! Blue Devils - Concord, CA -The other surprise of the night (for me!) was that I enjoyed BD's show! They move A LOT. The guard spins A LOT. So much talent in this corps, especially the guard and drumline. I don't mean this as any kind of a knock, but I don't know if this show has the potential to win a championship. I feel like it's missing something to make it truly special. I fell like Bluecoats and Crown will be battling with BD all season. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA -I call this show Elegant Nature. Very beautiful show. I know nothing about pit, but WOW - the their feature beginning of the show is so pretty. The hornline is FANTASTIC. So beautiful. I think this show was so enjoyable to watch. Not that they went anywhere, but I feel like SCV is back! Blue Knights - Denver, CO -I love glitter, so therefore I liked this show :) They sounded beautiful. I don't want to sound crazy, but I think they might have one of the strongest horn lines in DCI. The guard was also great and their multi-colored flags were so pretty. Some of the vocal tracks seemed a little disjointed, but perhaps it will all make sense once the full show is on the field.Their show wasn't finished, so it was hard to get a firm feel for it, but wow - what a great show!
  15. Lots of agreement early on that this range would be an exciting one to watch as we go into finals. These placement seem to have become consistent since just before San Antonio. So, current placement a lock? percent chance of moving up? percent chance of moving down? Of course if someone moves up, someone has to move down or tie (God forbid). My thoughts: Crossmen: 12th place A LOCK show and performance places them there solidly Troopers: 13th place A LOCK not enough in the show construction to get them higher, too good to move down Colts: 14th place A LOCK this could have been 12th with more talent and cleaner music book sooner voice over not quite right, don't think they are willing to budge much there Spirit: 15th place 40% LOCK 60% Chance to move down show is poorly designed, but they have more talent than some below them and have the finalist experience The Academy: 16th place 50% LOCK 50% Chance to move up better show than SOA all around, some sections as talented, really need to clean OC: 17th place 50% LOCK 50% Chance to move up better show than Academy or SOA, lots to clean yet Pacific Crest: 50% LOCK 50% Chance to move up tidiest show in 15-18 range, gotta turn up the communication and lower individual mistakes
  16. Where the address is not unknown. It's 500 E. Franklin Ave. That's right: there are two shows in Ohio tonight. Much attention has gone to the Tour of Champions show featuring seven corps in Massillon (which is where I'll be), but three hours to the southwest is a ten others are competing at the 35th annual installment of Soaring Sounds in Centerville, which is a suburb of Dayton. (However, there are even more corps, fifteen to be exact, competing in Indiana tonight, at the Open Class Prelims.) Here is the Soaring Sounds lineup: --Cincinnati Tradition (all age) --Academy --Jersey Surf --Pacific Crest --Oregon Crusaders --Colts --Spirit of Atlanta --Blue Stars --Blue Knights --Cavaliers Show website. According to the website, the first Soaring Sounds was in 1980, but CorpsReps doesn't list a "Soaring Sounds" or Centerville show that year. However, there is a Dayton show listed for July 13, 1980, and I'm guessing that's the one. It resulted in a tie between Crossmen and Spirit of Atlanta, followed by Cadets and Boston Crusaders. I'll kick off discussion with a question that occurred to me as I watched Colts' show last night in Pittsburgh: when the Scarecrow does find Dorothy, how is she going to react to the news that he murdered the Tin Man and Cowardly Lion? Or is he just not going to tell her?
  17. I didn't see a thread for tonight's show, so... Drums Along the Rockies - Cheyenne Edition Friday, July 11, 7:30 p.m. MDT Bison Stadium, South High School 1213 W. Allison Rd. Cheyenne, WY 82007 featuring: Pacific Crest Cascades Academy Oregon Crusaders Madison Scouts Troopers Starts in ten minutes. If you're there, post here!
  18. I couldn't find a thread for tonight's "Corps at the Crest, Los Angeles" show in Glendora, which marks the first appearance by the Blue Devils in six days. DCI gives the line-up as: Watchmen Golden Empire Incognito City Sound Impulse Gold Mandarins Academy Blue Knights Crossmen Pacific Crest Blue Devils Santa Clara Vanguard With a start time of 5:30 p.m. PDT, which was three hours ago. Why the radio silence? Where are southern California's DCP participants?
  19. Legendary jazz composer/arranger Sammy Nestico turned 90 yesterday. Read all about him and the celebration HERE Happy Birthday Sammy!
  20. http://www.arizonaacademy.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=452:announcing-the-2014-design-team&catid=37:news&Itemid=94 Anybody take a look at their staff this year? Their design team alone is already killer. Crown's main designer and their music arranger, and one of the Blue Devils drill writers. That alone is a great start. They have a great visual staff coming in, brass staff is almost identical to previous years so the technique should be the same. Most of the perc staff is coming back, which means Ike is returning for his 3rd year, should be AWESOME! And the new guard staff looks very promising. I really hope they can bounce back from this previous season, the main excuse for the scores last year was the design, looks like the problem should be solved now. How do you guys think they will do in 2014?
