CrunchyTenor
Cadets didn't do too badly in 03 with Malaguena...probabvyl the best non-Madison version ever. Disagree. Muchachos rocked the house with it, too. Half a##ed rehashes of something someone else did well once just will never cut the mustard though. Most corps imho give things a darn good shot but perhaps unless something is seen as a legacy piece then variety should make the world go round... Using the same example as above, the Madison version has the same basic construction as the Muchachos version. Madison added to it and took it up a few notches. Far from a rehash. Lance
You know what?"Perilous Skies" was pretty smooth when it came out . . .when I heard it for the first time, I was pretty impressed. Then, another wind ensemble decided to play it. Then another. Then another. Then some high school bands took a crack at it at Festival. . . .then the Cadets played it, and that was pretty cool. Then I saw it on the field performed by high school units that hosed it down so much that there should have been water penalties thrown at them. Then Holsinger wrote Graysondance. Then it moved into Holsinger overkill. lol. I agree with most of what you said. I just love the first 4-5 minutes of To Tame... a lot. I like all of the bombast and ostinatos later in the piece. But, I play around with writing, and I think that the first 5 minutes of To Tame... are immaculate.

Scottishfan
Disagree. Madison added to it and took it up a few notches. Far from a rehash. Garry in Vegas I did say at the end that I was just away to listen to Madison 1988 again. My point was not on the choice of piece but in the gusto and quality with which it was approached and executed
yorkhighmello
I think nowadays I would almost rather hear a corps play one of these songs that have been "played too much" because now you can't recognize anything they play anymore. Even if it is a familiar piece, by the time the arranger is done with it you can't recognize it anymore...
alextiger
Medea Even though I only found two corps listed as using Medea I seem to recall several corps mixing it with other pieces to make "new compositions". Off the top of my my head I think Glassmen, Cadets, and maybe Blue Devils have all done this of late.
