when i started corps, i played mello and sop, then i moved into the low brass. baritone was fun, but tuba (contra) is the grandest of all that i have played. although sometimes i think you have to be ######## to lift that toilet bowl on your shoulders...

Been there, done that. Started with a no valve bugle (Bb), then trumpet, skipped mello, then bari, and then the KING Contra. My eldest boy (14) already plays tuba so he saved himself some years, my next boy (12) plays french horn so he's got some learning to do. He also plays violin - yeah I know I don't know where that comes from. All three play piano. I hoping my eldest will march Colt Cadets next summer. My dream is to become a parent of three marchers at the same time.

lead sop, lead mello, contra, then 3rd bari, over the last four years with Capitol Brass Ensemble 90-93

We started off early`90 short on mellos, then contras in `91. The last year, I agreed to play bari as part of a deal with my friend, Kevin Foster, to play in the line.

With the new Capital Brass!, I often have to sub on various trumpet parts. And last year, we lost our 2nd Mello in late August; so I had to move over there for the rest of the season. Also had to play bari on one gig last year. So. I performed in 3 of the sections in `08.

REALLY hope I don't ever have to play tuba/contra again!

Did a different kind of tour:

1) 2 valve (Tenor?) Bari but valves were horizontal (few months at practice)

(go to new corps)

2) piston/slide Bari (few months at practice)

3) Piston/rotor Bari (next six years)

(#1, #2 and start of #3 all done in first 6 months of my career  )

(4 years of 'retirement')

4) Did Euph at bunch of parades (I was last one at the equipment truck and head of corps knew I was nuts enough to play it)

19 years later - newest corps needed Baris and Contra players so......

5) 2 valve Bari (this time valves were vertical)

6) 3 valve Bari

(Those 3V contras are a lot heavier than the P/R ones in my competing days  )

Also played a one valve (no rotor, no slide, no nuttin') at DCA I&E.

Nice!

I didn't know you had served in the Army.

There is no one I respect more than those who step up to serve our country.:thumbup::thumbup:
