Corps Shows You'd Pay to See Again

Recommended Posts

I have the DCI dvd of the Academy 2006 show....

If you could get in the "DCI Time Machine," and go to any show live, what would you choose? I'm going to list the corps that are out there right now and then my top 5 from corps that are no longer around.

Blue Devils- 1989- Would love to go back and see them during semi-finals to see what the infamous solo would sound like without the giant bucket o fail. Cool music....

Crown- 2007- Triple Crown- great show concept, best use of narration, amazing visual and music book!

Cadets- 1997- Never fully appreciated them that year as I was marching and saw them a bunch that year, now wish I could hear that opening crazy 16th note intro... wow

Phantom- 1991- On of my all-time favorite shows of all-time, Baccanale- still give me goose bumps.

Cavies- 1995- Planets, Planets, Planets! Loved the closing moments with the modulation from Jupiter back to Mars, last battery lick was Genius!!

SCV- 2000- Another show that as time goes by I wish I could hear again and again. At the time I kept hoping BK would catch up to them, but Adagio for Strings may be the best ballad of all time!!

Madison- 1988- Wow would I love to have been there for finals to see that show, maybe the best crowd reaction and loudest ovation in Finals history??

Bluecoats- 2007- Criminal show was a thematic work of art- the visuals and guard portrayals were amazing!!

Blue Stars- 2009- Enjoyed the WWII era show, wished the closer could've been a little more exciting, but would still see it again!

Boston- 2000- Though it passed up BK at the end, this was a fantastic continuation of their latin flare from the year before, great corps.

BK- 1991- Would've love to see them make finals for the first time. knowing that the corps song "I Go On," came from the 1990 show where BK narrowly missed finals. I'm sure it made for a very emotional moment as they broke through!

Colts- 1999- Loved the dark flare, this is still one of my favorite musical books of any group, just a great show.

Troopers- 2009- What a great story and deserving corps, I bet the ovation for them was phenominal.

Glassmen- 1998- Another corps that I didn't appreciate as much as I do now because I saw them so much while toring with them that summer--- AMAZING CORPS!

Crossmen- 2002- Loved the musical book, thought they'd place higher that summer, but very beefy hornline!!

Spirit- 198anytime- Great corps in the 80's and I would've paid to watch any of them.

Academy- 2006?? I believe was their Div II championship year, never got to see them live that year, but the sound from that hornline on recording was WOW. would love to see them live.

Corps from the PAST-

Star 1991- opening statement sounds like mellos playing not sopranos- dark sounds, man what a hornline!

Star- 1993- Would pay whatever it'd take to see them live, I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Suncoast Sound- 1986- Amazing, just amazing

Velvet Knights- Any year during the 80's lots of entertaining shows.

Magic of Orlando- 1995- Great corps, maybe their best of all time?

Anyway what shows would you go back in time to see again?

Great Mix Jeff!!! Lots of great shows. Found it interesting you liked the BK '93 Star Trek show... I have always loved the music but it seems it's the least talked about show of the BK finalist years!

Blue Devils '94 - It's unquestionable that shows lose some of their effectiveness on video. I'd pay to see this show as it was meant to be seen.

Cadets '93 - See above.

Star '93 - See above the previous "see above".

Cadets '00 - The recording I have gets drowned out towards the end due to the crowd going absolutely bat-#### crazy. I would love to go back and go bat-#### crazy with them.

Garfield '83 - To see where "it" all began.

Blue Devils '07 - The most recent finals I missed due to it being out west. Would love to see that opener live.

Cadets '07 - See above (but replace "opener" with "closer".)

I'm sure there are others, but this is a start....

Dangit... forgot:

PR '96 - That shows just oozes power.

Honestly - anything from any corps from 1988 till 2004. That's how long I missed DCI in person. While my parents sent me the old PBS broadcast every year on VHS It just wasn't the same. Serving in the military was fulfilling but you do miss a lot!

WOW.... just reading all the different years... and all the corps that are now defunt.. Maybe the 70's and 80's are not as high tech... max members was 128 and for the most part symetrical drill.....but there are ALOT OF AWESOME CORPS SHOWS LISTED HERE....... would love a day to just sit back... and watch 9/10's or all the shows listed because I saw alot of them live myself. Just sitting here thinking about all of those shows........ classic..... simply classic !

Thanks for that, Sam! I read every single word. I can't imagine how long it took you to come up with that. Are you involved in drum corps at all right now, or just a fan? You need to be directly involved somehow, if you're not. That enthusiasm is surely needed!

There are a few shows I long to see live:

79 Spirit...I play contra, OK?

83 SCV...Gianinni

83 Cadets...I must have listened to RPH 1000X between Dec 83 and Apr 84, even while driving out to SCV that April, lol

84 Suncoast

84 BD...La Fiesta, Are You F-ING kidding me? I heard it live, too. I can still hear it. "...and we're beating that? wow, we must be pretty good." used to go through my mind.

85-89 SCV...some of the best low brass lines ever. I heard all of them live except 1989.

89 Phantom..would love to have heard that live.

90 Star...I did hear it live. It was a transcendent moment, that they never captured again, IMO

93 Star under one condition: That I'm allowed to pump up the hornline during finals week. Somehow, they managed to play Dance of Vengeance like a Strauss Waltz. Technically perfect; incorrect implementation.

93 Phantom..heard it live many times, and never tired of it. Finals night was special.

96 Phantom..heard it only once,at Finals. I wished I had taken the time to hear it more that year.

99 SCV..Saw it in Erie PA, a small, yet nice stadium for backfield type stuff. The opener blew me away. Never saw it again :(

04 SCV..Scheherezade, saw it once, loved it.

07 Top 7 corps were so good, I could watch em all and smile. Bloo's tuba book was special.

08 Bloo..never tire of the Boxer

09 SCV..Someone close to me recently described SCV's music approach as "transcription," which made me smile. I look forward to Bartok.

Why 79 Spirit? Just wondering. I agree, but I am biased.
