2011 SCV

Recommended Posts

That was 2007 but in 2008....well, lets just say it got ugly and had nothing to do with the music lol.

OH, yes. I believe i remember the 2008 incident you're referring to.... might have involved a couple of members of a certain low brass section....

This is from another thread but think this is VERY TRUE of SCV this year.

I'm not naive enough to believe that to a person SCV is drawing the same level of brass talent across the board in all sections as BD/Cadets/Cavies/Crown are, but I also know for a fact that there is no "lack of talent" issue in play here. I believe that the horn line is embracing a technical (perhaps even philosophical) approach to their playing that is driven by their brass staff (call it what you will)... and I have no problem with it.

Make no mistake, I like getting my face peeled as much as anyone, but I believe the SCV brass staff is first trying to reach for a level of performance quality beyond the "death volume" that we're all starving for. This brass show is so complex in its rhythmic, harmonic, and dynamic content and demand, (as well as articulation, tempo, visual demand on the performer, etc.) that it's simply going to take time to achieve the level of quality that would be demanded of a "highest tier" horn line in today's DCI World Class.

What's great about this approach is that it strengthens the most challenging aspects of brass performance, knowing that you can unleash the volume at almost any point you wish, including when you're pushing for that little "extra" within the last couple of weeks of the season. You can't clean that brass book by neglecting the time and focus on the fundamentals necessary to tame the interior aspects of an impossibly difficult show like "The Devil's Staircase." The rhythms, harmonies, articulation, tempos, etc., are the "cake" of the brass book, the "death volume" is the icing to go on that cake, and that cake is still in the oven folks.

I know the SCV horn line has every bit of the ability to bring the volume, just as much as any other corps out there, but I'm not convinced that any corps' horn line could achieve what SCV is being challenged to achieve by using more traditional (or status quo) approaches to brass performance that we're more familiar with or are inclined to embrace in this activity. For those struggling with what they're offering right now, be patient, and rather than focusing on what you don't hear, take some time to listen to and appreciate what's happening inside those eclectic phrases (musically and visually). I have confidence that when they're ready to unleash the volume, it will have significant positive impact on everything else (i.e. GE Music scores, Ensemble Music scores, etc.).

IMO, this is the Vanguard stepping outside the norm again, exploring beyond the expected, going where others will eventually follow. They're simply being the Santa Clara Vanguard.

....

Thanks nemesiscorps for writing this, trust me, SCV can play LOUD. LOUD is not the objective of this show!!!!

GO SCV

I read that, good or bad, as "we are going to try to sound like the Cavaliers from 01-09".

Also, kind of on topic.

If SCV could get that sound... heck... half the time, that they get at the hit in the ballad in the company front. I have no doubt, they'd be in the hunt for the big trophy. That sound is ridiculously good. It is very 02' Cavaliers reminiscent... even if they only give it for a few seconds. I can see it.

Hopefully something changes by finals, I like the show, but playing more like that would make me love it.

I think they were only staff from 01-07, but I get your point. I'm not sure, I hope that SCV can bring the volume, with the show they have, with some more volume, this show could really blow down some doors. With the hit in the ballad, and the ending, this show could push some bleachers.

I still think that by the end of the season, they will allow them to up the volume, they're already louder than they were in Texas and California. As they get the show under their feet, they can get the music under control too, and up the dynamics.

In other words, GO SCV!!!!!!!

Keep climbing that ladder, and good luck in Minn. on Saturday!

Nah, Clemmer was there from 01 (winter 00) to 09... either that or he's lying on his own resume.

Oh, okay. I thought he was there with Fiedler, and left when he did. Shows how much I know.

Sorry for the confusion.
