mingusmonk
No, you are wrong Then if it’s a business why is it a non-profit? Do you want all the Bluecoats staff fired? If The Bluecoats had not been resurrected to be run as a business by Ted Swaldo, Phil never would have aged out a Bluecoat. Nobody knows better than he what it is like to be sitting on the sideline after a corps has folded on you. And he has the professional acumen and heart of Ted Swaldo the thank. We all do. And going into a non-profit venture and not treating it with the business sense that it deserves is a recipe for a failed non-profit. JimF-LowBari
And going into a non-profit venture and not treating it with the business sense that it deserves is a recipe for a failed non-profit. Yep... every October the biggest Antique Car show and auto flea market is held in Hershey, PA with about 200K people attending. Budget for that sucker is in the couple of $100K range (forget total) with renting hundreds of acres of space, contracting security, crowd/traffic control, insurance, ambulance service, communications, awards, award banquet, transportaion etc, etc and etc. Such a mess that people nearby schedule vacation time away so they won't have to deal with the traffic and crowds. Totally run by a non-profit group..... no one gets paid (except for free meals) but setting up the business end including budget is a nightmare worthy of a for profit group. Well there is a for profit group that runs a like event the week before. Understand running that sucker is about the same. Edit: forgot to mention why I know this.... I belong to the group that runs the show and volunteered there for about 30 years..... Edited November 30, 2012 by JimF-LowBari
corpsband
No, you are wrong Then if it's a business why is it a non-profit? Non-profits are very much a business!
N.E. Brigand
Then if it’s a business why is it a non-profit? Not-for-profit organizations are also businesses. They need to balance their budgets just like any other business. (I work for a nfp theatre that has a $6M annual budget and 50 full-time employees.) The difference is that any surplus in revenue vs. expenses goes to fund operations not to shareholders or owners, as happens in the for-profit world. And, of course, to maintain the nfp status, the business needs to serve its stated mission.
Jeff Ream
Are you sure about that? Sincerely, the Montreal Expos, Seattle Supersonics, LA Raiders & Rams, San Diego Clippers, etc... they didn't fold, they moved. kinda like a certain corps now residing in Allentown. a corps that used to say it was from Chicago. etc
Jeff Ream
This is true, but it's undeniable that those teams were sold/moved BECAUSE they were losing money and draining the league of resources. that's it! Move Pioneer to Madison! After all the Scouts don't rehearse there
Jeff Ream
Yep It's also not a business I think you need to read the 990's thread

bluehull
Fair enough, point taken. The St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.....
bluehull
honestly? from the get go The G-7 will be like the Brinks robbery. The robbers themselves solved the case for the feds, because of other members stiffing their cohorts with lesser money amounts. Up to that point there was no hope of the case being solved. Not to say that a couple of members of the G-7 are Brinks robbers, but it is a scenario that is a musical parallel in a light way. I agree, because of this , it is doomed from the git go....
