What would YOU pay?

Recommended Posts

I'd be surprised if you'll find that many people willing to go $50 on it. Harcore fans, yes, but for folks who might be curious, or legacy fans who are on the fence about how they feel about the new style shows, it might be a stretch. $39 sounds more realistic, and $29 sounds like it'd be a golden mean. After all, it's still just sitting in front of the computer or tv.

They could also offer two streams - a high cam for $20 something or a multi-cam for an increased price ($49 for multi?).

DVDs are dead. Physical audio/video media is a 20th century concept, and there's no point putting much energy into creating DVDs anymore, unless the DVD contains a lot of bonus material that isn't available anywhere else.

People who want to attend Finals will still go, since a live event is always better than watching it on the tube. I've gone to a few Super Bowls, and even if you have less than great seats, you go for the party, not just to watch the game.

(Speaking of that, can someone hire DCI an "event specialist" who can try and make the Finals event more interesting than it is? Right now, it has all the ancillary excitement of waiting around for a 10 minute oil change. As Johnny Carson once described the Oscars, "two hours of sparkling entertainment dragged out into a four hour extravaganza.")

I like your post, mobrien! Honest, and to the point. That's valuable.

I've done many Indy 500s in person. The actual race was a small part of the experience, for me. I was into the museum, the much easier track events days before, St. Elmo's with the Andrettis, show cars in every hotel lobby, cocktails with celebrities at the Conrad, the parade, the Circle cruising, the media coverage everywhere you went. The people you met from all over the world.

Don't know if our "thing" could ever approach all that, but, one can hope!

That's a good point. I've been to a ton of local shows and regionals, but only one Finals, and the events are set up exactly the same and run exactly the same. There's room for a little more "oomph" for the Finals event, I'd agree.

Note: coming from a guy who hasn't seen a DCI show in years and not a fan of some of the new stuff..

I'd probably pay up to and including $50 but I'd want to see more than just the top 12. Always been a fan of the non-top and smaller corps so would pay the $$ to see what is going on in the OC and lower half of WC. Annnnnd see what the Hades is being done with the stuff I don't like....

For various reasons it's harder and harder to get to and sit thru a long time in a stadium or theater so being in the house would be a plus.

if you want all that might I suggest you take advantage of the Semi finals simulcast. you can see all of the semi finalists perform. also, last year prior to the thursday theater show they showed the earlier QF corps (all of the open class) for free on the web.

Thanks, Jeff!

We simply must be upfront about this kind of thing. No one learns anything from no response, or "politically correct" responses. I believe it's time for a live, pay-per-view. That won't happen unless others agree in a visible way.

what I gave here is what I told DCI when I got the email. I've been clamoring on here for a live broadcast of finals for a while. In the email, I actually wen further, andI will here:

Not everyone can go to finals. Not everyone wants to go to finals. Face it, LOS is a polarizing venue. ( yes, we know about the storms......save it. this is concerning fans who dont want drum corps in a dome.) As a result, if people don't want drum corps in a dome, they won't pay to go. i think all they have to do is look at Allentown attendance to see this to be true..

But....also it's not always convebnient to go, venue concerns or no. Indy isn't easy to fly into, and connections mean higher airfare. Hotels aren't cheap. Renting cars isnt cheap. people with kids are kinda SOL for things to do to entertain the kids, as they aren't going to want to sit there and watch drum corps all day. Food isnt cheap. I could go on and on.

regardless of where finals is, there is going to be a large portion of the fan base who can't or won't go regardless. So, DCI can get 0% of the $125 or whatever tickets go for this year on finals night, or they can get $50 per log in to the Fan network to see it live.

Sure, people may have finals parties. Unless you own a movie theater, that's not going to cover enough people that it hurts the numbers. If DCI were smart there'd be two options: $50 if you already have the Fn subscription, $75 if you don't. I personally can think of probably 50 people who aren't going to finals anytime soon who would pay $50 to watch it. Right there is $2500 more than DCI si getting now. I'm sure we can all add to that total number of people.

Will it cost DCI? yes. odds are, it'll be cheaper than running the stream to a bunch of movie theaters Thursday where attendance can be spotty at best

1. What would you pay?

$50, maybe more

2. Will this lead to a smaller live attendance?

Possibly: it's impossible for me to speculate. However, what I DO know is that I currently don't go to Finals because it is to expensive to fly with the family to Indy at that time of year. I am a Fan Network subscriber, and I would pay extra to stream Finals live: that's currently money that DCI would get from me that they haven't been getting prior.

3. Would the availability of a live broadcast NOW result in a cancellation of your plans to make the trip in person?

Nope; as I said earlier, I don't go to Finals anyway.

3. How many would actually buy into a broadcast like this?

Several thousand again, it's hard to speculate, but again, what I do know, is that DCI would get revenue from people they have previously NOT been getting revenue from.

4. Will this hurt DVD sales?

Maybe Sync rights, and corps' lack of being able to retain them, will hurt sales FAR more than live streaming finals. DCI could present a package of streaming included w/DVD/Blu-ray sales (kind of like they already do with the current Finals VOD). I bought the DVD's in 2010, the Blu-rays in 2011, but decided it wasn't worth it in 2012 (partly because of sync rights problems). I would buy that package in a heartbeat if it was included with a Finals live stream: I suspect others would too.

5. Is it time to attempt this, given the economy, financial stability of corps, etc.?

Yes and No I think the time to attempt this was around 2010, but I guess better late than never

I agree with most of this, and none of this is new to folks who have been on DCP and have to endure my annual "open letter" (that I post here about 24 hours after sending to DCI) with ideas for DCI to maximize profit and minimize expenses/loss. I'm hoping this is finally the year DCI gets it together and streams Finals!!

I've thought of the theater show but couple of reasons why it might not work that well for us. Mostly couple of hours in a theater not a good idea physically....

Will have to keep my eyes open for any OC on the web for 2013....

Copyright question - would the 'Sync Rights' issues that keep certain tunes off the disks be a legal impediment to streaming finals?
