I would have preferred if you had characterized it as out with a "whisper" rather than a whimper.

None of those corps whimper...

Well, there was some prerecorded baby sounds in Cadets' 2010 show, but that one didn't have a soft ending.

When BD did this [in 1988], I think I referred to it as an "Encore" ending. This is what the Blue Knights are doing this year as well. They are doing a short Encore of previous material at a rather fast tempo while exiting stage right. It's really a different kind of ending all together.

Well, if it sounded soft to me, I included it (and BK is mostly a narrator and one horn), and tried to give voters ways to work around my oversights or points of disagreement!

I am enjoying the semantics of folks trying to say BD 88 was not a soft ending because of a couple of full brass hits. Sure, it was attitude, but much like Cadets the year before, it started with full brass and sections that quickly trailed out to just a sop, who just happened to have better staging for the 1988 mic setup vs. the poorly recorded 1987 Garfield soprano.

Because it was technically an encore tune, it wasn't the end of the show?!

SMH

Y'all just need to say "I didn't like it compared to XXXXXXX's soft ending" instead of trying splice it out of the conversation.

Phantom 2010 hands down. The soft ending made yoj feel as though you had taken a journey during the show, ending with you moving beyond "into the light". Pure beauty

Pure beauty and pure power together. My favorite show of all time.

A line had to be drawn somewhere. Suncoast '88, the last 30 seconds of which are much quieter than BD '88, was not listed in the poll for the same reason. (All I had to work with when setting up the poll was the recordings. I'd never heard a drum corps until 1989, and I couldn't travel back in time to hear how Cadets '87 compared to BD '88 live.) But I don't think it's a point that needs to be argued over, since the poll instructions clearly state that anyone who wanted to vote for a performance not listed could choose Other in the third question and identify that choice below. Just as you did: believe it or not, you voted for BD '88.

Chronologically, my favorites...

1989 Santa Clara Vanguard

1994 Santa Clara Vanguard

1994 Blue Devils

2000 Santa Clara Vanguard

2007 Santa Clara Vanguard

2010 Phantom Regiment

I would agree with those who say no one does a soft ending quite like Santa Clara.

1989 Santa Clara Vanguard

I wish there was a high-camera video available of SCV '89. (And '88, for that matter.) The official video focuses for far too long on the chair.
