What is this called

Is there an official (or unofficial) term for when a corps has a synth player, and for all of the long whole notes then just lay on the lowest tonic they have on the keys to "artificially boost" the low end?

I noticed this A LOT in the past 2-3 years, after spending a few years not following DCI as closely. I'm not calling out individual corps, just wondering if there is a term for this and whether it's typical for all corps.

It stood out so much to me in one show (can't remember which) because I naively thought "oh wow those tubas sound great!" only to see that none of them were even playing!

On DCP, that sound, first heard in 2009, has been christened "thunderous goo" (by Scott Gordon here in 2010).

I like to think of it as the brown note. Does anyone else know where this started? - It was way before DCI allowed the evil synthesizers.

Thunderous Goo is the perfect description.

To be fair it's worse with some corps than others. Crown and BD seem to have found a decent balance. Cavies not so much. Cadets ... just offensive.

Cadets and Phantom were the worst offenders this year. The bummer was Cadet's tuba line was really good and the low end wasn't needed. With Phantom, it was (sadly).

If you mean where did "Brown Note" start... my guess is South Park and their massed flutophone concert show.
