Madison Scouts 2014 -- Playing the Music of Stan Kenton and Don Ellis

Recommended Posts

Holy cow, dude. They still look and sound like Madison, and from what I've heard they're still the same brotherhood they were. I'm not sure where this anger came from.

Mike

Not to jaded individuals that haven't supported the corps and truly haven't cared about them in years. It's easy to hide behind a screen name.

Sort of like reading Chicago Cubs message boards, I imagine.

Maybe the best thing Madison could do for themselves is re-invent their identity rather than letting their alums try and force the corps into repackaging old ideas. Is there a rule that says Madison has to play jazz and pop? They couldn't do Bluecoats' repertoire this year?

It's hard to concentrate on driving hard and fast down the highway when one eye is constantly fixed on the rearview mirror.

Agreed. Madison's identity is like a bowling ball on an ankle chain right now.

I think there's a lot of truth in that, at least in how many alums seem to perceive what they think that identity absolutely has to be. It kind of makes me sad that there doesn't seem to be much room for these folks to allow their corps to expand its own boundaries and previously set limits and explore different show design concepts because they perceive that "this" is the Madison way of doing something, and not "that." Ever. Do they lack faith in their own corps to be strong enough to not only push those boundaries but venture into dare I say new ground? Do they think it's absolutely impossible to retain their identity and still explore new ground? It's difficult for me to say. I have zero affiliation with the Scouts or their alumni, so I am purely speculating on what I see and hear from a distance. Hopefully the views of their total alumni base are a bit more diverse than what we seem to see on DCP. But frankly, I find many of the alums here to be hopelessly stuck in the past. They were great times, make no mistake about it. But time moves forward. That's what I think about it anyway.

Troopers also seem to have this going on. Unless their show has the sunburst in it or is "like the Troopers" whatever that really means, they don't get the same respect... I feel for these corps. Its like the old guard insisting on using the old rotary dial phone and refusing to go to a cell phone.

It's not anger. It's just the realization of what the situation is and has been for the last several years. I mean, unless I am misremembering, the last time the Scouts even finished as high as 6th was 9 years ago, correct? 9 years.

This isn't about spats, it isn't about being a dinosaur, and it isn't about being jaded. Trust me, I wish things weren't the way they are. I have just accepted the reality of the situation and am being honest with myself about it.

It also shouldn't be about placements.

Maybe Time trip is really just a finale good bye to the old as the corps moves forward into unknown realms of possibility fresh white unis like a blank slate and a finale hurrah to music that made them fan favorites. Next year could be the birth of The new Men of Indiana I mean Madison.

Shouldn't be...but unless 10th-12th place are receiving the same appearance fees as 1st-3rd are, then it is.
