A "Tradition Corps"? What do you think?

Recommended Posts

Those ladies are scary. I've worked Bingo games for my old corps, and those ladies would be in there hours before the games were scheduled to start camping out their spots. I've seen arguments and fights almost break out because someone was in someone else's lucky spot. I'm 95% sure those old ladies never go to a single show, but they're luckily keeping a bunch of corps afloat with their Bingo addictions.

I bet a lot of them had no idea what a drum corps actually was, or would care to know. I know that's how it was at the Bingo I worked at in the late 70's (and bought my Bingo-playing Mother-in-law often). They were just Bingo players looking for a game! :tounge2:

I know parents that go to Finals to cheer on their kids ( some regrettably take no interest at all, and don't go to any shows.. they just write the checks ), They are there looking for their kids game. They have little to no interest on the shows, nor on anything else for that matter. Once their kid is done doing DCI Drum Corps they discard DCI Drum Corps like a used bingo card. This was as true in 1973 as it was in 2013, and will no doubt be true in 2014 as well.

Sure seems like it. Especially when people will be practicing at the Hall right outside, and they get told to be quiet because the ladies are prepping for their bingo game. And the bingo hall is covered in pictures with the history of the corps.

If the ladies can't handle it, then ask THEM to perform something as easy as a flamadiddle. They'll most probably look you in the eye, do a reasonable interpretation of someone in a seizure, then finally shuffle back to their divine boards.

They keep the organization afloat. It's better to stay on their good side. Some of them drop hundreds of dollars in a three hour bingo session. Every week

I've worked for not for profit bingos, lots of work, worth the effort and now volunteer at casinos. Did they have bingo trolls lined up along their cards? I'm curious. Ours did

Haha, yes they do. A lot of them have their lucky trolls out on the table. I always thought it was a weird quirk, I didn't know that bingo trolls was an actual thing. Learning something new everything.

It's their tradition and with understanding, knowledge. You get a virtual hug fsubone :) I hope to go to the Stanford one of these years. Maybe we can meet and I`ll give you a real hug.

The good news here is that the gap between the legend alums and the newer fans and participants are seemingly coming together with each passing day ( or hour ) that these units are " Marching Bands ". I think its only a matter of time that everyone will agree on this too. Things change. Why its taken us so long to come together in agreement that these are Marching Bands is sort of silly to me.. Its outdated thinking to think that a unit with trumpets, tubas, sousaphones, trombones, rock guitars, keyboard synthesizers, singers,, etc is not a " Band ". ".Of course it is. And as I stated, more and more people now finally acknowledge this obvious reality too. So there ARE things the older generation and the newer generation can increasingly come to agreement on.. and this is one of them, imo. So there are at least some positive things that can bring people togther if we can just step back for a moment and look what we have..... and agree on what it is we all can see.

Only problem. Why is the word "band" such a lame word! The connotations are awful in today's society unfortunately. The "b" is bumbling and round sound certainly not as cutting authoritative as the c in corps... and that "a" vowel sound... Geez it really gets up there in the nasal passage when you say it....

Id rather keep the word corps just for posterity's sake!

Thank you very much Linda. Working the bingo sessions was always an enlightening experience. And now I finally know the reason behind the trolls. The Stanford show is a great time, and a great atmosphere. My attendance this year though does depend on my travel plans involving drum corps.
