How Phantom Could Have Won in '89

Recommended Posts

From a present day perspective, the winner in 1989 would be Phantom. However, in the context of what was relevent for that particular show in 1989, I can understand why SCV won.

I've actually shared the '89 Phantom and SCV shows to a few members of my family who had never seen them before, or were aware of their placement. After they watched both shows, the general concensus was Phantom was better.

It certainly didn't help that Regiment's Drumline was a bit of a mess in the percussion feature. Between that and the completely unnecessary attempt at swing high-hat, they had no chance. The gospel version of the Largo would have been so much better with only the brass line...

I think SCV was technically better having seen both in person. I did like Phantom show a lot more than SC but SC was strong in every category that year even in brass. I do like the 1988 Phantom of the Opera show more than 89 version.

That video reminds me of what I see in DCI as of late, pandering with nonsense visuals, pretending it complements the music when it distracts, cheapening and diminishing the experience of enjoying the music

I’m either going to listen to music or watch porn, this, I have no use for; 2 half measures that don't equal 1 whole…sort of like dancing hornlines

Did you just compare CG and hornline dancing to this video? Jeez you may want to start wearing your glasses. Hornlines nowadays can play just fine even with the crazy visuals they have to do. It's a freaking field show. Not a concert.

I saw SCV in person and was very impressed even on the So. Cal tour.

PR I hear had a great show and have only seen video. Wish I could have seen both.
