Judging Panels for Finals.

Recommended Posts

"Subjective" is better word. When judges are asked to grade what they think is "great" vs. "very good" in categories like "General Effect", you are always going to get different points of view. Half the score is based on "content" and not "execution". Subjectivity is not bias. Subjectivity is built into the scoring system. They wouldn't have two judges if subjectivity wasn't at play.

I believe the vast majority of judges are merely being subjective in their scoring and not "biased" by the dictionary definition: "prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair."

It's like when two movie critics watch exactly the same movie, but one thinks its the "best of the year" and the other thinks it was "good, but not the best".

I agree with all of this. All arts adjudication, way beyond DCI or even musical ensembles, is subjective. You can use a lot of different rubrics to evaluate art, but it all ultimately comes down to an experienced adjudicator offering their opinion on what is best.

The judging panel this Saturday will come under fire no matter who wins/loses. The amount of BS they get will depend on which corps win/lose, of course.

We're all stimulated by different things. Yes, a judge may be given criteria to use as a framework for evaluating and assigning a number but opinions vary greatly. When our team is being rewarded and the other team is getting hammered, it's very easy to agree with the judges and their appropriate scores but when you're on the team that's not, it becomes a long season. This is either going to be a typical INDY week with huge gaps materializing between corps that were close all season or it will be unique with possibly 2-3 different champs over the three nights.

Every judge who agrees with you is a genius and every one that disagrees with you is an idiot!

End of story.

Which is the exact same situation that sports referees face.

Let's just have all the judges be there. Or at least, have 4 judges on every sub caption. Then average them all out like normal.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

But this out of the question from DCI's standpoint. DCI has halfazz size panels in June, July at many shows ( no Brass judge... or no Percussion judge.... or no Guard judge). If DCI can't find a way to have these performers receive full panels for half the competitive season, then its a non starter that DCI would give " 4 judges on every subcaption " at Finals any possible consideration. That said, I like your thinking outside the box on this, and on the surface it sounds like a great idea to me.
