Great Lakes Percussion way back in 2007 was probably the first big successful attempt at this type of setup. I think it's cool that all the board players play all the time (instead of all the tacet you see in a "conventional" config). For all you perc experts: Does it force a reduction in the total overall size of the FE?

It eliminates the need for independent vibe players by combining them with a marimba in a pod, so instead of 4 + 4 it's just 4. If you don't have timpani and just a rack player or two plus the drum set that's only 7 players or so plus however many on synth. Carrying 12 or 14 gives MM's more opportunity to march (as well as a chance to "move up" through the ensemble.

Yeah that's the only negative really. From the corps' POV you're only carrying your strongest members.
corpsband
Hmm another implication: half as many bodies to move stuff. There are plenty of venues (not to mention practice sites) where one body per frame is almost a requirement. Guess the pit will be getting a workout! Musicman1084
I think it's still important to find a good balance, but yes, it can certainly reduce the size as drummantx mentioned. I'd probably never go less than five or six pods given the layering in front ensemble writing today, but it's still less than the nine mallet players we see nowadays. According to a source on reddit 10 keyboard players (20 keyboards total) though I might hazard a guess at 7 or 8. 2 synth 1 timpani and 1 drumset I THINK Cpit fielded 16 in previous years down to 14 this year.
