Yes, both this stadium and the one in the other photo are great venues for DCI. That us also my point. The 2008 DCI finals was one of the most electric nights for fans, not just because of the reaction to PR, but because of the venue itself. The number of fans, optic wise live at the event, overflowed most of the stadium. It had the atmosphere of sold-out standing room only and no matter where you ventured to go there were elbows rubbing elbows. The same number of fans in the massive oil can or any other pro football stadium allows for the live optics of wide open empty space and diminishes that feeling of impressive sold-out electric excitement. DCI works well at hs and smaller college stadiums for local events and medium to big University stadiums for major events. They have enough fan numbers to make those venues 'electric'. But DCI does not have enough fan base to make the oil can anywhere as electric feelung as the stadium was at IU in 2008.

however since Lucas Oil started popping numbers over 20k, the enclosed space has created some humongous reactions soundwise with some of the intense competition the last few years. I'm no fan of the Thunderdome, but in talking to people that were there and watching online or listening to the cd's theres some monster crowd reaction sounds that are on par with 08

What exactly is your point

The DCI fan base has the numbers proven to sell-out small to medium-large scholastic stadiums; that the atmosphere at such sold-out events is extremely electric for both the fans and the performers because of the energy and the optics produced in such sold-out situations  And since the fan base for DCI is rather limited, the same number of fans sitting in a 3/4 empty pro stadium is nowhere near as electric and it does not create anywhere the sense of excitement, thrill, exhilaration, anticipation, which is felt at a Finals venue like U of Indiana in 2008. DCI, both in performers and fans, to me are best served at those sell-out type venues not at mostly empty pro stadiums.  That, I suppose, is my point.

And if it rains at an outdoor championship venue and the show is canceled/shortened, the "electric atmosphere" turns into the "WTF was DCI thinking???" atmosphere. Complaints from the same folks who complain about indoor drum corps.

I know there are some challenges indoors... but the older I get, no rain, no sun beating down on me during prelims, and a nice, air-conditioned venue... I'll take it. LOL.

well moving finals to a place where every day in August isnt a potential devastating thunderstorm would also work

Okay you basically just repeated what you said in your last post.

It has nothing to do with Bugles and nor is it practical to move away from Indy now.

But... the optics of a 2/3 to 3/4 empty stadium, even with the curtains, is still there.  And while sitting in many sections of Lucas you do not get a good view of the entire home side area like that at U of Indiana, but only a view of your level or section. The electric feeling will thus likely never approach that of 2008 unless Finals are back at a venue that 'feels' and ;looks' like a sold-out event, or if Lucas somehow approaches being sold-out itself

But... you seem to be pouncing only on my replies, not pouncing the initial photo that had nothing to do with Bugles which prompted my replies.  Now, go eat some bugles and chill out for a while!!

well no. Seats have been sold around the corners, and the curtains hide a whole lot of bleachers not being occupied. Even being there in 2010 with one of the least well received champions of all time, the place didnt feel like a huge 75% empty cavern. And when Crown and cavies went on, the place did have that electric feel to it....just that BD sucked the life out of the place. And watching the last few years with the dogfights at the top, the crowd energy seemed on par with the glory days.....where for once the roof helps with sound! Allentown, as energy filled as it was this weekend is wide open on both sides, and that back wall allows a lot of sound to go right over it.

I am not saying Finals at the oil can is a dead experience, nor without any energy at all.  But what I am saying without any equivocation is that the overwhelming energy, excitement, atmosphere electric, twilight and evening sky with stadium lights screaming against the dark sky and the rising stars which is produced at, for example, a sold-out Highland Springs local show in Texas let alone the 2008 Finals at the U of I is not, has not, and never will be at that type of electric level in The Can. That is.... unless the DCI fans eventually fill the can in the same manner as football fans do at indoor Super Bowls or U2 fans do at indoor pro stadiums; then DCI Finals in The Can will likely 'feel' like the DCI Finals at venues like U of I stadium in 2008!
