That happens with about any respiratory illness but not a given. Talked to an acute respiratory distress specialist when a nasty strain of the flu hit over 2017/2018 season. He had 20 somethings in good health go to hospital in the morning and pass away within 24 hours. At the time little over half the ICU had ARD patients.

Yow... just read two articles that hit regarding “the flu” (not Coronavirus). My home state released info that deaths are up and multiple deaths in all age groups not just very young and elderly. including age range of potential DCI members to keep it Corps related.

And a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist has passed from the flu at age 60. He had his seasonal flu shot but was sickened from a different strain.

Should wake up anyone who thinks “one size fits all” applies to respiratory ailments. Be careful folks...

Hokkaido and South Carolina both have a population of approximately 5 million.

The governor of Hokkaido just told the island's 5 million residents to stay home for the next few days, to slow the virus's spread.

Have there ever been any drum corps in Hokkaido? I know there were some well known groups from Yokohama, but that's some 500 miles to the south.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen the media so irresponsibly over hype something to this extent EVER. How ridiculous!

So what is “the media” saying that is not the truth.... craps hitting the fan all over and it’s being reported *shrug*

Thus spaketh a certain television game show host, i.e, a member of the media, in 2014:

---"Ebola patient will be brought to the U.S. in a few days - now I know for sure that our leaders are incompetent. KEEP THEM OUT OF HERE!" (7/31/14)

---"The U.S. cannot allow EBOLA infected people back. People that go to far away places to help out are great-but must suffer the consequences!" (8/1/14)

---"The U.S. must immediately stop all flights from EBOLA infected countries or the plague will start and spread inside our 'borders.' Act fast!" (8/2/14)

---"Ebola is much easier to transmit than the CDC and government representatives are admitting. Spreading all over Africa-and fast. Stop flights" (10/2/14)

---"A single Ebola carrier infects 2 others at a minimum. STOP THE FLIGHTS! NO VISAS FROM EBOLA STRICKEN COUNTRIES!" (11/10/14)

Those are among more than 150 public, and dare I say, "over hyped" utterances that person, who shall remain nameless, made over the course of about four months.

Anyway, the most important thing everyone can do to impede the spread of COVID-19 is to wash your hands.

Lots of people do it wrong. Here's a useful aid for those who need a refresher.

"Chinese scientists found that the new coronavirus was similar to SARS in December. Authorities later ordered them to destroy their samples and not to speak about it."

And that would be a different but also wrong way to response to a potential new disease threat.

On that subject, does anyone know why the 1918-19 influenza outbreak was called the "Spanish Flu"?

Not to state the obvious but Ebola essentially melted u. This is a flu with a higher than some lower than other mortality rate

Not to state the obvious but flights were not cancelled and there were nonetheless far fewer American cases of Ebola than there are of the new coronavirus.

(Also, coronaviruses, which include this new strain as well as SARS and MERS, are in a different family than influenza.)

There were 11,323 deaths worldwide from the 2013-16 Ebola outbreak; COVID-19 has killed about 2,800 in three months.
