I’ve only seen Boston live once in Atlanta, but to my ears Boston had the weakest hornline of the top 5. I’m no judge though

True. You're not. Boston was 3rd in brass with the brass judge in the San Antonio Regional, and the brass judge at your Atlanta Regional had them 2nd in brass. That said, fans out of their training, experience, often chime in with what their untrained eyes and ears assess.  I will sometimes chime in on percussion performance levels, when in reality I have never played nor taught any Drum of any kind in any Drum Corps.

Can a Corps win all three of these captions, and not win the gold medal ?

can BD not win any of these captions and still become 20x ?

Crown won 3 captions in 2016 and got third. I think you can have the best corps while not touching what judges deem as the best show.

Question:  from what I found on DCI's website, the caption awards are determined as follows:

BEST BRASS – based on Music Brass score
BEST PERCUSSION – based on the total Music Percussion score
BEST VISUAL – based on Visual Proficiency score
BEST COLOR GUARD – based on Visual Color Guard score
BEST OVERALL GENERAL EFFECT – based on combining 4 General Effect scores

Is this still the case? If so, what is meant by "total" Music Percussion score, and how/why is that different than Music Brass?

Assuming the above is all still in effect, my read of the Prelims recap gives us the following:

General Effect (combining 4 GE scores)

1. BD - 78

2. BAC - 77.05

3. BC - 76.05

4. CC - 75.95

5. SCV - 74.55

Visual

1. BC - 19.55

2. BD - 19.5

3. BAC - 19.4

4. CC - 19.2

5. SCV - 19.1

Color Guard

1. BAC - 19.2

2. BD - 19.0

3. BC - 18.7

4. CC - 18.65

5. SCV - 18.4

Percussion

1. BD - 19.65

2. BC - 19.55

3. SCV - 19.35

4. BAC - 19.25

5. CC - 19.05

Brass

1. BD - 19.6

2. CC - 19.5

3. BAC - 19.45

4. BC - 19.1

5. Cadets - 18.9

<snip>

I believe that's leftover from when there used to be two Perc judges (booth and field) instead of two MA judges.

Crown won't win the Ott.  I think it is evident the judges don't favor what's happening there this summer.

Or maybe for 2022, BDs brass is just better and winning fair and square.

I think the tone and quality on the Conn Selner horns has helped BD get back to their classic sound.
