BD started with 143 newbies and 20ish vets give or take.

The thing that makes all this difficult is that not all those "newbies" were young.  Many may have been 21. They were just new to BD.  There may be many 19 and 20 year old members who have had their fill of DCI and now need to focus on school or other things.

Remember, not all kids that march DCI do so until their age out year. Some kids do a year or two of DCI and then move on to other things in life. So it's impossible to tell who is coming back and who is not. This goes for all the corps.

You could have a corps that has 30 legitimate age outs, but they may have another 25 members who simply wish to move on to other things. They could have college internships to deal with the next summer or they could graduate early, or they prefer to work a summer job. DCI is expensive and taking part in the activity on a yearly basis can be tough on the wallet.

On top of that you will have kids who decide to march with someone else, or they do decide to come back to the corps only to realize they simply cannot afford it and need to work.

So the age out number can give you an idea of how many may return, but in the end there are other factors to consider.

The real predictor of future success is the number of returning vets.  And we won’t have a good idea about those numbers until winter.   But, the fewer age-outs, the bigger the pool of potential returning vets

I don't know,  the bluecoats had 5 rookies (to them) marching their bass line this year and they still took home the Sanford

Valid points....but regardless, BD has 69 holes to fill for next year, and not all of them will come from BDB and understand the culture and teaching methods.  That DOES play a part.

You also have the talent pool of Mandarins, Pacific Crest, gold, and possibly some SCV just in the state alone to fill that. Not to mention people possibly from academy that aren't too far away. If BD ever worried about filling spots then we need to worry about DCI itself 😂

Not surprising . The Blue Devils were chock full of vets , many with lots of experience marching DCI Drum Corps and/ or WGI units . New to BD . But many had secured their experience elsewhere . It was a mature group on the whole . Clearly talented too .

It’s always gonna be that way. I contend again that the final rankings are 80% in direct correlation to the average age/experience of each corps’ marching members.
