If it isn’t loud enough I cup my hands behind my ears. It’s surprising how much difference that can make. A couple times it’s been too loud and I’ve actually had to put my hands loosely over my ears. First thing you do before buying the snacks/drinks is to speak with the manager. Request to have the operator check that the sound is up. Has worked every time in the various theaters I've been to. When I arrive and see many HS age teenagers, I ask if there were any teachers/band directors. When a hand or two went up, I politely asked them to quiet down those students who might become too distracting for the rest of us. I've seen a guy in Indy that was wearing what looked like homemade scoops for his ears. I have cupped my hands to help hear a snare or quad passage of music. The electronic sonority is what kicks in for me at certain venues and sound levels.
