Blue Devils this summer pulled off something that astounded me.

(disclaimer - was in a dome, though)

Was watching their show through Ragtime, and was thinking to myself that they just weren't as loud as they used to be. Rhythm Medley really wasn't doing anything to make me change my mind until the big reentry after the soloist. (Where the drums start playing upbeats.)

That little section, without a doubt, was the loudest segment I've ever heard any single marching unit play. Period. It was so loud all I could feel was the pounding drums and all I could hear was the distortion of sound in my ears. Until I listened to the CD's in August, I had no clue as to *what* they were playing in that part. Simply incredible - so loud that all you could do was feel it.

I'd vote for Phantom as "consistently loudest", with Cadets, BD, Spirit, and Seattle being loud in parts, but not all of their show.

Cavvies probably get my vote for "softest horn-line" of the year :P

Yeah, Regiment's volumes were probably higher for a bigger percentage of their show (Shostakovich is good "loud" music), but I think the Blue Devils hit the peak volume out of anybody.

I saw the PBS broadcast last night. I've got three things stuck in my head today: Shosty 10th Sym, Blue Devils' opener, and the Cavalier's closer. Now I'm really anxious for my CD and DVD to arrive. :)

BD's Rhythm production and House of the Rising Sun both had moments that really gave me a horrible headache. I loved every second of it... if I have to get a migraine for loud music, so be it.
