Biggest messups in DCA history?

Recommended Posts

1984 Steel City Ambassadors, Montclair NJ show.

the third DM was given the chance to bring the corps onto the field and direct opener. His directing voice was absolutley unintelligible - couldn't distinguish between 'attention', 'dress' or ' I slept in a Holiday Inn last night'. Ended up with half the corps at ready, the other half at rest. Instead of fixing it, he started the show with half the corps, the rest catching up to the drill about 10 measures in, and the music near the end of the opener.

Someone else can remember why, but somehow we were given a second chance to perform at the end of the show, and that score counted.

John, that was 85. My first (and 2nd) Show back from Garfield. b**bs

I hope that this is the right album. Way back I used to have an album (for you young'uns that's like a big, black cd played with a needle) of 'An Evening with the Corps at Carnagie Hall'. The Skyliners were playing Tarantella (sp) and at the end one the horns plays the last two notes of the song after everyone else finished. You hear Winkie turn around to the crowd and say, "Aw, these guys....THEY DON'T WATCH!" Big goof up, but Winkie just made it seem real, like it was now okay for everyone to laugh.

1975 DCA Championship in Rochester at the old Holleder (nee Aquinas) Stadium...

It's been raining on and off during the evening finals show (yes, prelims AND finals were run the same day back then!) and the field was rapidly becoming a bog, but when the Crusaders started their final performance, the skies really opened up. DM Alan Smythe "waves off" the corps in the middle of the opener (in mid-phrase!) after the chief judge's gun is fired to signify the end of judging, and the corps runs for cover. They were later allowed to start their performance over.

And it was all preserved on vinyl. Some casual listener, not having been there, not knowing the story, and with no relevant liner notes on the album cover for guidance, is still, over 30 years later, trying to figure out what happened with the "false start"!

Yes, Rocky Horror... I was just getting ready for my solo...

Known for being a bit on the "intense" side...

I threw my horn about 20 yards when I realized what was happening. When we got under the back side, I was still moaning and groaning (cleaned that up for DCP) - I think (I know) pounding my head against a concrete pole when the chief judge in question - the late great John Collum, tapped me on the shoulder, handed me my horn and said...

"Tom, it ain't worth it... it's only drum corps"

for the record... it was Bruni's call to pull us - not Alan's... He told me later we were getting ticked off the sheets and he said they were nailing us so bad it was a "show of mercy" to stop us - he said we HAD to be better on the restart... he was of course, right...

Oooh, I've got one. How about when Bush trooped the stands in 2005 finals. Now that was a doozie. I heard it cost them a placement.

Or how about 2003 Renegades when we had a corps member cross a boundary by, like, a single step and it cost us TWO places???

Gotta love those penalties!

I can think of at least one that needs to be mentioned here... How come DCA didn't penalize the cops for coming on the retreat field and breaking ranks in order to remove a person in cuffs?
