what would be YOUR last straw

Recommended Posts

actually,,alot of DCI corps have already stopped being entertaining.

That's pretty much a matter of opinion, isn't it? After some of the overly-"artistic" and un-musical stuff we saw in the latter part of the 90s and (for some corps) the early 00s, the entertainment factor has, if you ask me, really started to make a comeback.

Best way to stop it before it starts: a write-in campaign NOW that states that either DCI posts a statement by 2006 Championships week ...

Because the D1 corps directors and the people at DCI headquarters have nothing better to do between now and Finals ...

I think that the day a corps dons polyester, silk shirts with huge collars and bell-bottoms...uses a disco ball....and performs "Saturday Night Fever"...

that will be the day I walk...until then....keep rockin' the house!!!!!

Of course it is. I mean, in my opinion corps didn't even start being entertaining until about the early to mid-80s, and it's been getting better just about every year since then. B)

Though I am making an effort to build my appreciation of 70's-era drum corps. I'm just not there yet...

I agree, entertainment is making a comeback in DCI, but there is still some ways to go.

Here's looking forward to it! B)

Any instrumentation other than drums and bugles. If DCI goes down this path, they will regret it.

Best way to stop it before it starts: a write-in campaign NOW that states that either DCI posts a statement by 2006 Championships week that they will NEVER allow anything other than percussion and brass instruments - or all those writing in will BOYCOTT both 2006 audio and video purchases AND 2007 season altogether.

Money still talks the loudest.

There was already and anti-amp petition presented to the BOD. Luckily it went nowhere.

Heh, heh. Actually, I could see watching the Velvet Knights do that show -- it would almost be in character for them. If they still existed that is.

Regarding the OP -- what would be my last staw? What would cause me to walk away from the activity?

Well, I attend far fewer shows now than I used to already due to a) vocals, b ) overpowering pits, c) not enough equipment work in the guard*, and d) not-musical-enough music. So I guess you could say that I have one foot out the door already.

I was going to say woodwinds would be my last straw, but I could more easily accept a saxophone solo in the pit than I can accept miked vocals. So, here is my answer, redundant as it is with the previous posters:

1) common use of miked vocals

2) marching woodwinds

3) stringed instruments (guitar, piano, cello, etc.)

* though this isn't as much of an issue now as it was 5-10 years ago, IMHO
