Corps Names

Recommended Posts

Canada's Marching Ambassadors was supposedly a name given to the 2nd Signals Regiment when they were appearing as an exhibition unit on the U.S. east coast (an early Dream competition?) in the 1950's. The name stuck and while still the regimental band for regimental occasions they would don satin blouses and compete on Saturday night as Canada's Marching Ambassadors.

Scout House I believe took their name from the old brewery stable in Preston Ontario that the scout troop re-built as their meeting place...it's still there.

Sarnia Sertomanaires were sponsored by the Sertoma Club, York Lions by the Lions Club and the Optimists...well, follow the line of reasoning here...De La Salle was part of a private Catholic School in Toronto, De La Salle College. Cadets LaSalle have a similar story being an outgrowth of the army cadet corps at La Salle College in Ottawa.

Many of the Quebec corps had great names that translate well into english...Arc en Ciel, Companions, L'Offensive, ...the Vics from Montreal were an off shoot of the regimental band of Queen Victoria Rifles..corps de tambours et clairons...sorry for any spellers here! Les Metropolitains (metropolitan Montreal) ..and Sphinx de Ste. Therese!

Favourites of mine include the Jesters (clown uniforms they rented to circumvent the Musicians Union ruling that the Service Corps band could not play half time at a football game)...Flying Dutchmen ( Kitchener-Waterloo was known as Berlin before WW1 with a very large German population...still great for Oktoberfest!) ..Conqueror of Hamilton Ontario had great uniforms.

If I've made some errors here, wade on in...

The Erie Thunderbirds were named as a carry over of the corps moving from Meadville, PA to Erie,......................The original logo was a traditional Thunderbird design derived from several American Indian tribes, however, the current logo that was adopted during this move, is taken from the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino that was part of the Las Vegas Heydays of yesteryear, that hotel has long been torn down,...................but you can still find our logo all over these collectible items on ebay Classic Thunderbird Items

The name Star United was chosen after much debate on the Star Alumni Association's web forums. the SAA is an alumni association for the previous members of the various groups from the Star of Indiana organization including Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, Star of Indiana's Brass Theater, Blast!, and Blast II Shockwave. In 04' we all came together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Star of Indiana with a performance at the Indy 500 Festival parade and a Gala dinner at Cook Inc. headquarters in Bloomington, IN. We had a great deal of fun getting the 'family' back together and perfoming. The alumni association was re-invigorated and from within it a core group of folks in the Indianapolis area have decided to move forward with the idea of a fielding various forms of pagentry arts ensembles. Star United Drum and Bugle Corps was born and currently fields as a Mini Corps. Hopefully some of you reading this will come and help us move forward in the future. Watch this space!

When the idea of a mini corps was put into action in 1996 by the 3 founding members, I had a concept. Troopers style uniforms (never used in DCA or by an All-Age Drum Corps circuit to date, as far as I knew). "Ghost Riders in the Sky" was chosen as an initial opening statement and fit the look. I was searching for a name and was discussing this with my son (age 24 @ the time...not envolved in Drum Corps at all). He looked at me with a puzzled look and said " Dad, if your playing "Ghost Riders In The Sky" why not just call yourself the Ghost Riders !!!!!

The rest is History........Doug Mellenthine GR co-director/founder

The Sunrisers got their name from the Sunrise Highway on Long Island, where the corps was founded. If someone else fromn Sun would like to step in with more info, go right ahead! :)

Hi Chris!

Happy New Year to you and the whole fam!!

I don't have time to look for the Sun book right now but, if you get a chance.... scan in the entry called *As The Corps Turns*

(I think that was where the name was explained.)

A while back, on RAMD, someone posted the background to the name Appleknockers. It was a good one... wish they would chime in here and share it again. If they don't, I'll see if I can search it out on the net.

an "appleknocker" is another name for a carpenter,..............

:worthy: The Hurricanes were originally a fife and drum corps John Collins Post circa 1932 ....Aptly Renamed the Connecticut Hurricanes in 1955 after hurricane "Diane" devistated the Naugatuck Valley

Being a Louisiana native, I always wondered about that.
