It's Official, Cadets need a new PR writer

Look, guys and gals, they're IN the game!

Prepare for it.

Best of luck to all DCA corps. But what I fear (respect?) is not that they're in the game but that they will become THE game.

I'm not even sure people should even get upset over these things?

It seems like to me they wanted to play up on the "2" theme of the e-mail. "septemeber 2nd" "Cadets 2" "year of the 2" "2 performances". And honestly if they added "hopefully" or "possibly" it would take away from the release and they needed to inform people about the prelims and finals competitions to sell their weekend package.

However, for those that don't like Cadets2 I can see why the phrasing may come of as being audacious... but again, only if you don't like Cadets2.

(sigh)

Let's get one thing straight here. I like all corps, from the tiniest struggling last-place finisher to the perennial title contenders. Nothing makes me happier than to see new corps make the field. I have defended Cadets2 and George Hopkins in this forum against the unfair attacks they received back in the fall. I think I made my support for Cadets2 clear back then, but if not, I'll repeat....I support Cadets2.

I discovered drum corps in the early 1980s, and marched in the late 1980s. The years in between were extremely difficult times for drum corps, both junior and senior. Corps were folding all over the place; membership numbers were plummeting, even with fewer surviving corps to fill. Some corps publicly declared what size corps they would field and where they aimed to place, as was an increasingly common practice in the preceding decade....only in these trying times, those promises could not be kept. This type of PR failure was devastating to some corps.

As a result, that approach was resoundingly rejected. A new conventional wisdom developed where corps refrained from setting such specific competitive placement goals, and press releases no longer promised such specific contest results or exact membership quantities. Corps leaders made it a high priority to convey this philosophy throughout the ranks. I entered the activity right in the midst of this attitude adjustment, so that's what I learned.

Evidently, times are a-changin', and I have some more learning to do.

One other thing to note....I see many responses alluding to video posted by Cadets2 attesting to their current quality. I'm at a disadvantage here, as I don't listen to pre-season audio/video clips. I prefer to see and hear the shows for the first time as they are intended....on the contest field. From the comments here, it sounds like this might be a debut so historic as to rival the DCA rookie record set by Phoenix in 1975 (5th place). That would be very impressive.

Looking forward to seeing all the corps (Cadets2 too) this summer!

Doesn't having Cadets2 in the picture up the game for all the other corps? Which is good for all of DCA>

How so Keith? I mean all a corps can do is work with what they have and doesn't matter if 1 corps is ahead of them or 10.. or 12... Having been with a corps that was last at Prelims, trying to make top 10, trying to stay in top 10, trying to make top 5 we just had to worry about ourselves and bust our butt no matter what.

Edit: Belive the phrase audiodb is looking for is "Don't write no checks your ### might not be able to cash". Seriously I don't get the public notices of "this is what we're going to do/how we will place". Just been around too long and have seen too many wierd ###ed things happen (like Phoenix or any corps that unexpected folded in the off season). YEA may have a very good organization but that ain't the only thing needed. Wish GH would just let the corps do it's "talking" on the field.

Jeff got it right. 12 positions in Finals. Will C2 be there? Yes. Where will they be? That will be determined on the field.

As for predictions, they are only worth something of value if you either have a personal bet with a friend or you take it to Vegas. As for my personal experience, I've been to Casinos, Boats, Race Tracks, etc. I think I've lost $75 in 40 years, but my bets never changed the outcome.. However I've had some good food. The two-count Prawns at Oaklawn in Hot Springs are fantastic. I understand that Allentown has good food too.

I've seen some senseless press releases over the years, but I don't recall any this audacious.

From a Cadets mass e-mail today, here's how their blurb on Cadets2 begins:

Does anyone recall a first-year corps having the nerve to announce their plans to perform in both prelims and finals in advance, as if it is an absolute certainty they will make the finals cut?

I think people need to go and review who is on staff at Cadets2 and realize that those gentlemen are for REAL and know how to WIN.

Making finals cut? Not even going to be a issue.

Top 5 needs to be looking over their shoulder IMHO.

Kevin

to avoid any confusion

there are only 10 (ten) open class positions in finals - not 12...

look if C2 wants to load up and make serious predictions let them. It will serve one of two purposesin the end:

they'll look correct

they'll look like fools.

Time will tell which it'll be, but with only 12 open class corps, and one of last year's 11 not coming back, odds are in their favor they're a finalists.

so wanna make em look foolish? then the other 11 better get their #### together.

it's that simple

If that is indeed what happens, the the rest of the corps will have no one to blame but themselves. Frankly, a high-placing C2 might well be the best thing that could happen to DCA.

I can understand where you are coming from. There are quite a few things about Cadets2 that are a slap in the face to a lot of the tenure Open class programs they will be competing against, but realistically, they will likely be in the Top 12/Top 6. If they were a brandy, shiny new drum corps with NO drum corps experience I could see this being a very bold statement, but YEA knows how to put together a high quality program. I'm not at all a fan of this venture by GH but there is little doubt it will turn some heads, both within the DCA community, and outside it.
