What does the singer do for the first half of the show? Does she just chill in the pit until the ballad? I can't see where she comes from in the vid

she walks in from left of 50, but from exactly where is not clear.

It took a couple of views to also notice that it was the soloist out on the 50 towards the end of the ballad and into the next movement. Once I cued in on her on the next views with the guard shedding their final garment into the center, the soloist's orchestration of the deconstruction parts started coming together for me.

I saw a couple things at Gardner Webb that make me think they're going to make her more visible. I think that's all I wanna' say for now. :)

I don't know, personally I think the Bluecoats are the future, and they certainly don't have any singing in their shows.

This more screams "gimmick."

Would you consider running around the field and running and sliding up and down ramps a gimmick?

Yes, I would and said as much during last season.

Would you call a gold medal a gimmick?

Sliding up and down the slides wasn't done for sh*ts and giggles. The theme was Down Side Up, as in down on the football field, hanging from the side of the ramps, and playing instruments on top of the ramps. It's in the same vein as Tilt.

You know, gimmicks don't always have to be bad.

Hey!  If a gimmick works then great and it worked out for them.  Let's just let this play out and see what happens with Crown's show this year.  Some people will like it, others will not.  That is the nature of the beast with drum corps now.  They are trying something new just like Bluecoats last year.  I didn't like Bluecoats at the beginning of the year last year but it grew on me and learned to accept it.

Just to add, Bluecoats use of the slides, the use of speakers throughout the football field to create a new soundscape, the use of a giant tilted border around the football field, these are all pushing the boundaries of what has been done in the marching arts.

Singing? Been done, and been done in a more effective and tasteful manner before (By Crown themselves too in 2013 and 2014!). Dedicating 5 minutes of your show to a singer being the main feature over your strongest asset (the hornline) in the hopes of "pushing boundaries" and "deconstructing" the future of DCI will do nothing but push the audience's patience.

Initially, my impressions of this show are less than enthusiastic.

But I feel like this show might grow on me.  It could turn out to be brilliant.  Kind of like Bluecoats Kinetic...that show was at first..."what the heck is going on?" And then later "WOW, that's brilliant."

But concerns about this show...1) HATE the ethereal singing...like nails on a chalkboard 2) The closer seems weak.  Except for the musical demands, "there's no interesting WOW moment..." visually.  It's just park and blow it seems at the end.  It doesn't seem to have that, "You've GOT to see this! interesting drill maneuver or exciting general effect."   Leave the audience wanting more visually.   Like in Kinetic ... the color guard member being lifted up on the sphere thing.  Something.
