P.S. - Musclebud, they are giving a reasonable explaination - sync rights. That is perfectly reasonable. As far as Phantom - did you ever think that maybe that was at the request of the corps? A la Crown 2010, when the kid blew out his leg? (which was HORRIBLE... happened right in front of me)

seriously? Now I remember why I never post on here - you people don't listen. At all. How can you ##### about the stuff on Fan Net being pulled? You want DCI to leave it up and get SUED over it? Again, if I'm gonna get mad, it's going to be at the corps staff that went ahead and programmed material they weren't 100% sure they could get copyright or sync-rights for. You people complain a lot, but don't offer a solution. Because there ISN'T ONE, other than doing stuff that you know you can get permission for. And stop "threatening" on a DCP forum to stop buying DVDs or Blu Rays from DCI. I'm sure they'll live without your $100, bc there are plenty of people that understand the copyright world and realize where the fault lies. Anytime you do ANYTHING that isn't public domain, you risk not getting rights. PERIOD.

I'll admit to not seeing Boston way back in the 90s but I really like what they've been doing the last few years.

Definitely San Antonio - maybe Indy - Definitely NOT the TOC show in Houston.

Most people go bonkers with delight in the rare occasion when some other Corps than the trifecta of " The Cadevaliers " wins the top spot. When Phantom won in 2008, it was the loudest ovation at Finals at the announcement of the Champion in decades. My guess, most fans would be happy if Madison, Crown, Boston,SCV Bluecoats, etc... anyone else... could win a Title. 80% of the titles since the 70's go to one of these 3 Corps.

I'm not sure what qualifies as a dinosaur. I first marched in 1973, so as much as I would like to avoid it, I believe I qualify. I also firmly believe that the comments I am about to make represent a large portion of my generation despite their conflict with other sentiment expressed within this thread. I love watching and listening to drum corps from my era. It was and is kick arse drum corps. But I also have loved the development in DCI over the past 30 years. I can't state the following strong enough; as much as I love corps from my era I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK. Corps today is different for sure but it is also spectacular. Some I don't care for so much, but I could say the same thing in the 70's. But when I like it, I like it a lot. Once in a while I dream I am back in college. Despite the fact that I had some of the best times of my life there, I always feel out of place in those dreams. I can't go back. Different times. The same holds true with drum corps for me. Cherish the past but embrace the future. Bottom line I just wanted to post a different perspective from a qualified dinosaur.

FWIW - Rumor has it that Surf had ~300 kids at the audition camp, with ~80 horns. Not too shabby...

So they had to remove a bunch of the electronics? Is there any way we can get some of the copyrights for narration in some older shows revoked? who owns Yowza?

After reading some posts on here... its very clear to me that the person who started this hated the fact that DCI started in general. He must have been very big on the VFW and American Legion. At least that's what i'm getting from him. The only thing that doesn't make any logical sense to me is that he is reminding us what Don Warren did and what not, which is great because I love history, but lets not forget that he also was one of the founders of DCI. In other words just ignore him. I love DCI too much for him to affect me in any way.

Why would the current Executive Director's of individual corps give up voting control of DCI? The decisions made by the BOD of DCI has direct impact on the individual corps operations. The Executive Director's first responsibillty is to his BOD, staff, members, volunteers and his whole organization and not DCI. If you are a current Executive Director you want your board to be as diversified (alumni, parents, business people and donors) as possible inorder to minimize the risk of getting fired for making one bad decision and have the ability to implement a long term strategy for growth and fulfill your mission. That means nationwide recruitment for members to serve on corps BOD's. In today's economy it is difficult to find board members that have the correct skill set needed and the time and the money to serve on a non profit board. I have served on a corps BOD for six years. To make a Saturday board meeting I have take a days vacation, drive to the airport and park in the short term lot. Pay an outrageous airfare to the city where the board meeting is taking place. I normally stay with relatives or friends but I do have car rental fees, gas and food expenses. Sure I can deduct the $ 4,000 a year I spend attending board meetings but it still seems a lot when I get my credit card statement. Several other board members have similar expenses to attend the same meeting. I love the activity and I will continue to serve on my board because I know that without board members corps can't operate effectively. For those that think that the current DCI model is broken you are wrong. It has served the corps well for forty years. Enjoy the 2012 performances.

It doesn't matter how stupid or shortsighted you or anyone else thinks it is. The simple fact is the folks that hold the copyright have every right to have the video removed. I suggest you contact the rights holder directly and share how you feel.

Why do you think that? There is no logic in that statement. Crown has been competing at a top 5 level for years now, and that fact that Madison used to compete at that level is completely irrelevant. I think it will be MUCH more difficult for any of the corps 6-12 to break into the top 5 than any of us think.

No Spokane Washington show this year. Right from seattle to Boise without a stop in Spokane. The Spokane Thunder is trying to set down some roots... Dont see DCI trying to help them much... Just my .02

wow... You people are amazing. So quick to blame DCI. Do you REALLY think that DCI just CHOSE not to get sync rights for this stuff, bc of money? Do you really think they want to be answering the phone calls and emails from you people complaining about the black-out on your DVDs? Trust me - they didn't get the rights bc they couldn't. Period. Honestly, the Scouts staff knew this was a possibility when they got permission to arrange, and chose to go ahead with it. When you get arranging rights, you usually can get a pretty good idea about sync rights. TRUST ME, they knew. And don't blame DCI for "tricking" you into buying DVDs and then telling you about the rights issues. I am sure they tried until DVD production/distribution began, and finally had to make the decision that they did. It is absolutely 100% the corps responsibility to make sure they pick music that won't have issues, in my opinion. Just bc DCI has to secure sync rights doesn't mean they are going to check up on corps repertoires in the spring and say "hey, you may want to re-think...". That's not their job. I guarantee you won't see a DVD from the Scouts with the full show - I spoke with someone very close to the corps, and the sync rights were DENIED. Not TOO EXPENSIVE. DENIED.

If I had to chose between Muncie and Michigan City, it'd be Michigan City in a heartbeat. What a stadium for drum corps!! Right up on the performers...sit about mid way up and you will get your face melted off! Can't speak for Ball (is not a) State's stadium as I've never been there. Maybe I'll venture down there this summer.

I agree they won't plummet 'out of orbit'. IDK -- maybe I just can't imagine a Cavies show without Michael Gaines design. His impact on every caption was tremendous. It's hard to believe his absence will have no effect on the competitiveness of their design. I hope he returns to DCI soon -- his genius will be missed.

My blu-ray arrived last night. Was able to watch 6 of the corps last night (including all corps that were "edited"). Honestly, they did a great job with the edits. I've seen Crown live in person, once on a webcast, and once during the quarterfinals movie-broadcast so I was semi-familar with their show. I expected there to be this jarring edit right at the start where it appeared like part of the preshow was cutoff. Luckily, that wasn't the case at all. In fact, if I hadn't watched the show all season, I would have not have suspected any editing based on watching the blu-ray. For the Cavaliers, they fade to a crowd shot during the transition of audio tracks that skips over the 30 second piece of music that was cut. Again, I wouldn't have suspected a thing if I hadn't known about the edits from this forum. Finally, the blank screen for madison is obviously the most noticeable intrusion. Some text appears right before the song begins to play that says "video is not available due to copyright considerations". It was definitely weird watching drum corp on a blank screen while music was playing. The video turns on again right when the final note begins. Funny story, my 5 yo son was watching Madison with me and when he asked me "why did the screen go black?" the only answer I could give him that he would understand was "I'll explain it to you when your older". It's almost like he asked me "where do babies come from?" Anyway, I think they did a great job given the circumstances.

Your Colts reference would be accurate EXCEPT that Mr. Orwoll is responsible for running one of the most financially stable corps in all of DCI. And he does so without the pull your Blue Devils or Cadets have competitively. He's not the reason the Colts are placing out of finals. And I'd give your Carla reference credit except that the Colts' guard is consistently a strong caption. You named two of the LEAST responsible individuals in that organization. For realz.

Good thing for the Blue Devils that they stagnated in the top 3.

Hmm... guess I'll just repeat myself. I can't see why more "more body movement" woud be a "jab" to a Scouts fan. And I can't see why -- given the current staff's lineage -- we shouldn't expect to see more dance from Madison. I can see why it might upset some folks who are stuck in the past -- what DCP often calls dinos -- but I'm certain there are plenty of Scouts fans who don't fit that description.
