your full retreat was a little different than full retreat as i experienced it. talk? jokes? laugh? we had attention and parade rest. if we were lucky, one rank at a time, we gut to squat for about 30 seconds to shake out our knees. even when we won dci in 1981, we came to attention to acknowledge it and went back to parade rest. we saved the hugs for outside the stadium.

if this is truly the death knell of the current events forum, and there is no opportunity for reprieve, i will be disappointed on several fronts. the closure message suggests that we go find a forum that specializes in politics. here's the thing: i like drum corps people. drum corps was an important part of my life, and in many ways those experiences of my youth shaped the man that i am today. that can be said for just about all of the people who post on the CE forum. to be honest, i don't want to go to some random political website or news website to disucss politics. i enjoy having those conversations with people who were in drum corps. one of the other aspects i enjoy about this forum is that, although we all share a drum corps connection, we come from a wide range of locations and idealogies. finally, i enjoy discussing current events with a group of folks who have become a community. honestly, i don't want to go to some website and discuss the day's events with BushBasher888 or KerryKiller999. i would prefer to have that conversation wtih dan, barb, dave, kelli, matt, lance, daniel, jerry and too many others to name. also, it has always been an added bonus that we could toss allusions to drum corps mixed in with our current events discussion! it just added a unique flavor to the topics of the day. sadly, if the ce forum does not come back, i will probably not be on DCP much. although i enjoy discussing world events with drum corps people, drum corps is not a part of my current life. there are only so many war stories to tell in the alumni forum. i don't march senior. although the div I conversations can have some nuggets, i care very little to argue about amps, horn tunings, etc. i enjoyed this place because it offered me somewhere to discuss things that matter to me and keep some connection to my drum corps roots. if DCP does indeed keep this forum closed, it will be my loss. the thing is, it will also be DCP's loss because, despite whatever problems it might have had, it was a forum with real spirit.

Thanks, Mike and John - I agree that I shouldn't start mucking around with any of my network settings! Not only might it affect the machine and applications, it could have a detrimental effect on my career. On the days when the machine decides to not play nice, I guess I will just get more work done. Thanks again for the feedback.

periodically, i am unable to connect to DCP at work (main site, forums, any part of the site). for example, yesterday, i was unable to access DCP all day. i used to think the site was down, but, when i get home, i see that people have been happily (or not so happily in the CE forum!!) posting away. however, the problem, always corrects itself. today, i can access it at work no problem. i assume that it has nothing to do with java, flash, or other items that need to be installed with the browser since it is a periodic problem. for obvious reasons, i cannot just call our IT guys and ask them why i can't access DCP! any thoughts on what could be causing this? thanks!

this is not true, however, for "the president's own," which is the usmc principal performance band. the members do not go to basic training and have no military duties other than being strong musicians. they are the only members of the u.s. military that do not go to basic.Recruit Training

as uncle z said, i was in MI. i was a korean voice interceptor for 8 years, stationed or 5 of those in korea. spent my last year at fort ord. i just returned to korea in december for a three week vacation, my first time back since 1991. i felt like drum corps really prepared me for basic. since the first week was basically learning how to stand at attention, wear a uniform and march, i felt like i was a week ahead of my peers the whole time. also, as others have stated, having worked as hard as i did during the summers as a teen, i found basic to be not that much harder as a young man.

not to detract anything from mr. dorritie, but it is an awfully small shelf that is full with two awards.

your corps got that money as a member of dci. no corps budget is made up solely of member dues. it has been said a couple of times already, dci IS the member corps. anything you have negative to say about dci, you might as well contact all of the directors of the member corps. also, as has also been stated, it seems like only one individual has been asked to not share photos. i have not seen a statement from the board or from dci telling all participants to stop sharing pictures. why the freakout unless such happens?

1981 - as we marched into olympic stadium in montreal, rick south played the "fiddler on the roof" theme for us on his old rotor/valve baritone. (rick south was our horn instructor that year. for those who don't know, he was a legendary dm for scv prior to that and a great baritone player.) that little refrain, played by that man for us, encapsulated all that we really needed to know as we stepped on the field. i can't ever remember what words were said to us piror to the competition.

i don't have any of the numbers you are asking for. i know that when i marched (81-82), what you described below is exactly how i felt. although we always put out for every show, dci midwest, dci canada, etc. was always a much bigger deal. the local shows felt like preparation for the big shows. i only marched with santa clara, so my experience is colored by that. also, coming from the west coast meant that we always got our "local" shows done early and hit the road, so experience could be very different from someone who marched in a corps that could compete in many shows close to home during the course of a season.

in 1982, the cadets were starting to make their run up to their very successful career in the 80s and beyond. at the huntington, wv show, the cadets beat the vanguard for the only time that season. the bridgemen were next to us at retreat. when it was their turn to play off the field (they took 3rd that night), their DM came up to our DM and said something before they started playing. they played "shaft" as they went off the field that night. after the show, our DM let us in on the conversation. the bridgemen DM major said, "this one's for you 'cause you got it tonight . . . "

i was a bay area kid, and it was all about the vanguard and the blue devils for me. i can't say that i had a favorite between the two. vanguard was much closer to home, and i loved getting into the corps. vanguard easily became my favorite corps and remain so.

i have two types of marching dreams: in one, i am back in the corps, still young. typically, we have just come back from a show, and the staff is unhappy, and we literally practice all night long with the stadium lights on at whatever school we are staying at. i wake up from these exhausted, as though i have really been marching all night!! in the other, it is a reunion/alumni corps type thing. usually, i am the only one who has aged and everyone else is as i remember them from 25 years ago. i am always completely out of it in these dreams. i don't know where to be, or i forgot the music, or i left my uniform on the bus. sort of a "forgot to wear my pants" dream, but worse, since i not just embarassed, but i am letting down the corps. man, i wish i could just have a "marching and having a great time like the old days" dream!!

i remember in 1982, when we did some massed hornline stuff with madison and phantom, some of the guys from madison joked around that there was a secret category "geographical analysis" that concord and santa clara always maxed out!
