Most obscure corps you ever saw/competed against

Recommended Posts

Hmmmm, can't say I've ever heard of Coffeyville Tornados. Of course, that would have been after my time.

....or before. Coffeyville Tornados were an all-girl corps sponsored by a high school. They competed on the field a bit circa 1950 before being limited to in-state scholastic functions in subsequent years.

Do you know if my memory was correct about Plainsmen/Tri-Vel Raiders? That may have been before your time though.

I'm curious about that, too. That would explain why the two names never appear in the same contest. I see both names in use in 1972, but only at separate events.

And if no one mentioned it yet, the Frontiersmen (Olathe) were known as the Trailblazers (Overland Park) prior to 1972.

On the post earlier about the Rebels, Windjammers and Marquis, I'll try to lend some light , but there is still a few pieces missing on the puzzle.

The Rebels were a small corps from Fox Point, northern suburb of Milwaukee. The did have an excellent guard in the early 70's and finished high in that area for several years. The last I saw them on the field was in 1973, but they could have competed later.

The next I heard or saw of the Rebels was in 1975 as a merger between ??????? from Milwaukee and the Rebels calling themselves the Princemen. I want to say the other corps involved was the Chordaliers form Milwaukee, but I could be wrong.

The Princemen only competed in 1975. I saw them at State Legion that year as a Class A corps(small corps).

Yes, it was the Chordaliers. The merger competed in 1974 as the Chordalier/Rebels, and in 1975 as the Princemen.

The Windjammers last year was in 1974 or 75. I do not have any knowledge of them merging with anybody.

Windjammers also competed in 1976, after which I am told they joined forces with the Thunderbolt Cadets, who reclaimed the Thunderbolts name in 1977-1979.

Sorry,

Don't forget the Marquette Majestics, Ironwood blue Knights and the Castle Rangers (munising)

I was at a 'ski flying' (ski jumping, only bigger ramp) competition in the UP in about 73 or 74 and it was COLD! The Blue Knights came out to perform, blew air into the horns to warm them up....they all instantly froze solid and they marched off, not having played a note!

Which corps was from Iron Mountain? I was thinking that was the Blue Knights.

The Marquis angle into all this is that the Marquis were around since 1968 or so. When the fall of 1975 and 76 rolled along, there were roughly 15 to 20 people that came from the Milwaukee area, some who marched in the Rebels/Princemen. There were also people who came from the Windjammers, Royal Knights(uncle z and a few others), Americanos in 1977 along with the Princemen people. The Marquis glory years were from 74 to 77, with 77 being questionable because of terrible programming.

Going from Light classical and jazz to Rock, terrible.

Before giving up in the Spring of 78, the Marquis were going back to the classical and jazz book.

Thank you for all that! Once I got to thinking about it, I thought maybe the reason my friend ended up in Marquis might have been cause the merge failed, or some members went elsewhere instead of sticking with the merged corps.

Oh, OK. I figured since you marched '77, that Coffeyville was around that time too.

Interesting about Frontiersmen/Trailblazers. While the latter name does sound familiar to me, I don't ever recall competing against them under any other name than Frontiersmen. But that doesn't mean it didn't happen. I was only 10 when I first joined, so I probably had no idea what was going on around me at the time. LOL. And it could be that we didn't even enter the Great Plains scene till later in my drum corps career.

Not Jolly, but circa '62-63 Milwaukee had the Royal Emperors. Their corps director, Florian Wicinski, would pass the hat on the bus after a parade - collecting enough gas money to get the corps home.

The blue-clad Royal Emperors were a spinoff from the Starlites, who were a spinoff from the Militaires, who had evolved from the Gladiators in the early 50s.

As the 60s progressed into the 70s these corps started merging back together, and even resurrected the Gladiator name. For a while, it was quite possible to host a complete corps show with just Milwaukee units. There was St. Matthias Cadets and their Preps, Our Lady of Mercy High School girls, the Wagner Chordaliers, St. Gregory the Great Crusaders. The Cedarburg Thunderbolts and the Mariners were in the suburbs. And on the near Southside was a new group called the St. Patrick Imperials.

Ahh, a reading from the Book of Ken!

Ahh, a reading from the Book of Ken!

In the Beginning were the Gladiators. And the Gladiators begat the Militaires. And the Militaires begat the Starlites. And the Starlites begat the Royal Emperors. And then Blenski of the Starlites begat the Imperials. And the Imperials and the Thunderbolts begat the Thing. And the Thing begat the Pioneer.

Silver Spectrum from Marshalltown, Iowa

Grenadiers were from Cedar Rapids, Iowa - predecessor to the Emerald Knights

I always liked the Marquis from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin pb

Royal Grenadiers were actually from Kankakee, IL. I used to compete against them every weekend in 1982, 83,84. I was a member of another small obscure corps from Chicago:

The Illiana Lancers, Chicago, IL /Northwest Indiana

Others to add:

The Imperial Guard, Indiana - remember them being huge!!

The Vaqueros - Wheaton, IL

The Hornets - Chicago, IL

Wausau Story - Wausau, WI

River City Railmen - Omaha, NE

Spirit of '76 - chicago Area - Senior Corps - The Drum Major's nickname was "Lurch"
