Lucas Oil Stadium Director Discusses 'Sound Ideas'

Recommended Posts

I am somewhat disapointed by the articles that DCI has posted to date on the sound issues at LOS. It is refreshing that they are even discussing this, but I think the efforts may be misplaced. Most fans would like to understand the impact on the state of Drum Corps if this venue was to be changed. What is the real effect of getting out of this deal with LOS. Not only is the sound a problem but the viewing perspective from the sixth level where the most density of seating is available is terrible. This stadium is huge and the perspective from the top anywhere except the very center is way too far away. The least that DCI could do is to start building more disparity into the ticket pricing for these "bad" seats. I understand that this year(2010) is on the books and that there is no changing out of LOS. Based on that they should do everthing they can do in the short term to improve the acoustics, but lets face it this problem is not going away. Save the future of the Drum Corps Championships and act on getting out of the contract for the years to come. Move from this stadium to open air environments. Go back to the rotation of venues so that fans from different areas of the country can have occasional opportunities to see the DCI championships without traveling across half of the country. For the diehard fans it is actually enjoyable to go to different places to see the championships. Each one offers different opportunities and perspectives for fans. There have been many excellent venues through the years and I am sure there are more to find. DCI fans are the type of fans that will endure the search for hotels and accommodations. They are there to see the corps not enjoy the city. The fans enjoy the adventure of the tour as much as the corps members do, primarily because many of them want to be there or were there once and want to experience once again that time of their lives. Let's not forget what this activity is about, "the life experience". Venture back out DCI, for the pursuit of the best "Open Air" stadium we can find wherever that may be.

Unfortunately to me all the reply to LOS " sound ideas " has about the same validity as the homeland security person announcing the system worked as it was supposed to ( ideas coming from DCI - not other posters )

To me this is just further evidence that the powers that be ( and direct show design ) do not feel that the audio component of Drum Corps is the most important aspect , rather visual is number one and artistic storytelling the most important supporting aspect of the activity. IMHO WGI field shows are where the stewards are taking the activity.

Look for more tables and chairs in the future , hornlines will be reduced to dance ensembles. Drumlines will perfect the crab step and maybe ( as in the other thread ) pits will fall victim to the synthesizer.

It even seemed to me last year that Crown was beginning to drink the kool aid ( less power chords , etc )

Shows will be more tailored to domes , and the roof will remain closed ( as DCI desires )

They will have an issue to deal with in staleness ( IMHO ) - even the NFL championship game would suffer from " the same old " venue problems.

This is exactly where it's going. The writing is on the wall for all to see. Chances are that there will be a paying audience that will replace those of use who don't care for it, too. It's just the way of things.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who believes in this conspiracy...the "Big Brother" of music & marching arts.

i personally think it's all marie czapinski's doing. she's trying to make it so, in her old age, she can be wheeled out to judge everything she's been involved with at one time. may she have her cake and eat it too.

I agree with you, and have believed this for a long time. Having championships indoors (ala WGI) is another piece to the puzzle. When guards started looking like WGI creations for the field, I knew that it would not be long before it would spread to the corps as well.

Before we can say my full name, DCI will have morphed into Blast for the field.

I agree with you..........these individuals have been responsible for turning scoring from 65%music/35%visual to 50/50, adding the guard caption (nothing against guard, but the day is coming when a guard number puts a 3rd place corps in the winner's circle), "perfect" scores, and even an attempt to eliminate the separation of music effect/visual effect, to just one effect caption, so that we can have "visual" people calling the show even more than they do. LOS is a joke soundwise, yet obviously they are content to stick with it, and we have other indoor venues, too......"otherwise, the wind will blow the flags"......case closed.......

i'm ok with 50/50 scoring...as it should be. I just feel way too many music tapes have comments referencing the visual, when maybe 5% of the visual tapes refer to the music side.

I'm pretty sure DCI DOES care about the audio aspect of drum corps. I just think they are in a real rough spot with this stadium right now. And there is tons they aren't telling us I suspect... which is why I wish they had more transparency.

I totally agree, but I think the problem lies on the visual side, not the musical. There are way too few musical references on visual tapes.

oh i'm with you. the problem is, in DCI and elsewhere, few have the balls to stand up and say so.
