Joe Salvatore
Yes, you're right. It was the "West Side Story" show. Yes and they had to borrow some horns from us in Velvet Knights to perform the finals show. I am really glad no one got really badly injured. BigDale
Two different corps, years, and housing stories.1985 Velvet Knights... housing got screwed up before Allentown Eastern Championships... corps had to vote on our housing option 1. with SCV at their school gym 2. with Madison in the park surrounding the stadium We voted the Madison park option as many (no offense) did not relate well with SCV Les Eclipse had to perform first at every show that year as a penalty for marching overage members the prior year. Back then it was the traditional Prelims/Final every corps who was someone competed type Allentown show. At 5:30 am a lot of us were sleeping right next to our bus and were woken up by a bunch of French and pounding of sticks on rubber pads. I do not remember a vote, but I do remember waking up to rain. Dave Elder hyped us on that "sleep in the park" crap and it was not fun.
KeithHall
NYS AL Championships in Syracuse, forgot what year. We were staying at the youth hostel at NYS Fair Grounds and we were asleep, lights out and everyone falling fast asleep until...BOOM BOOM CRASH CRASH....Mark Twain Cadets decided to rehearse at midnight. Marv Newton goes out to tell them that we were asleep. This came to no avail as they continued. The next morning 10 people were sick and we pulled out of that show. We also had a "war" with CDofA (We won). We were sent to a rehearsal site before AI Open and it happened to be CDofA's site too. They were not happy and we weren't moving. I think that may have been 1974.
Joe S
We did that with 27th. It was a lot of fun interacting with them in NJ and Mass. We also housed Blue Rock one year. Remember those days Mike.I had kids from 27th, Cavies, and Boston stay at my house over the years ( never mind all of the guys from Garfield that lived at my house) .We stayed with 27th one year and another time with the Kilties. I felt sorry for the family we stayed with from the Kilties. This guy's mother took in about 7 of us.We had an off day and the guy's mother planned a big picnic for us on the lake. As luck would have it poured. She finally cooked for all of us in her kitchen and we had a blast!!!!! Boy would like to say thank you to them again for making us feel like kings. The 1976 Kilties had a somewhat similar occurence at CYO, when they got to their practice site only to see the Seneca Optimists there. My younger brother got one of the local police to escort them off our field so the Kilties could practice, which didn't endear him to Gary Czapinski! bluecoats88
in the winter of 1981 prior to the 1982 season the Bluecoats were given (bought for a $1) an old school in Massilon, Ohio. Well, this was a pretty good sixed school with lots of field space a fenced in area and a large auto shop area where the corps stored the truck and busses. also where we parked all our cars when we left for tour so they'd be safe. Well, this school had no heat, it was warmer outside at all times, and there was only one shower room which worked. By the way the showers felt like you were showering in a sleet storm because they were so cold the water actually iced over a bit. The corps had gotten some of those large heaters that football teams use on the sidelines, but couldn't run them overnight while we were sleeping since it would probably kill all of us due to the gas fumes. So it was really cold when you woke up and made your way to the ice showers. Unfortunately, the corps never did put any money into that facility to make it nice, cause it had potential, but it needed a lot of work. wsssb
Circa 1976 the Velvet Knights stayed at the National Guard Armory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The smell was indescribable whenever the huge Quaker Oats factory (right up the river) started up.

drumno5
One July we had a mid-season camp near a sod farm. The smell of manure was pervasive and overpowering, to say the least. Fred O.
neholgate
Hey Keith - It's funny that you mention the school in Butler. I stayed there with the Argonauts in 76 for the American Internation Open, and it was one of the few pictures I took because it was so different. Sorry about the quality, it's been sitting in a scrapbook for 30+ years, but I'll bet you this is the school you're talking about. Small world eh :) Greg. I think VK stayed right down the hill in '78 0r '79. They built a new school close by and we stayed there. Of course the VK members had to go check out that school at night... I remember there was an old grave at the site.
