Phantom Regiment 2011

Recommended Posts

Dear PR,

Please take out the very very very lame electronic drum kit from the Lacrimosa. That piece is beautiful and it's being played well. The kit ruins it.

Thank you,

A fan

I thought it was actually tasteful to throw in the drum set at that moment. After all, that is supposed to be the time that Romeo and Juliet meet at the dance, a beautiful waltz with a backbeat. I think they were trying for some Evanescence...

I think they have gone back to what works with the depth in their horn sound and arrangements. I agree with everyone else on the Drum kit sound, kick that to the curb. I also have to say that I don't care for the sound coming from the percussion. It will probably sound better on the field.

What I liked about Rennick was the subtle moments of execution and the cleaniness of the arrangements. I don't care for the beat down the door agressive sound. I'd like to see them tone that down a bit.

Looking at the Clock it appears they have more time to add more musical moments or slow down the tempo in some spots to capture the GE moments.

I don't particularly like how they flow into Elsa's, I'd like to see them develop that a little more.

In order for Phantom to compete for the top spot their percussion and guard has to be in the top 3. If they can stay in the top 5 overall I would consider this a very succesful year that bodes well for the future.

I think I'm OK with the 'drum set' thing: kind of add a little bit of a 'modern flair' to the arrangement. It does seem a little bit jarring now, but in context to the rest of the program it might work a bit better. I think we've heard Phantom do odd percussion arrangements to classics and turned an "odd" stylistic choice into a classic.

I do agree with you regarding the battery arranging. It's possible because we're all used to the past several years of great arranging, it will take time for some of us to get used to the new arranging style. But I agree that this book is a contrast to the more subtle style of Rennick's arranging. We'll see what it sounds like on the field, and by August it will be radically different anyway.

What? Phantom's been in the top 5 several times in the past few years. He was referring to the corps overall.

LOL my bad, I meant 08 not 98......... (where's my teeth..)

Honestly...just not very good. 6th will be lucky.

Just curious - what kind of vibe did you get from seeing similar PR videos at similar times before the season from, say, 2005 to 2010?

I ask because I felt similarly about 2006 as you do about 2011. That show ended up being one of my favorites by PR ever and wound up in second.
